Advanced Tab ?? (XPP)

I have come into several situations now where there was a need to be directed to Control Panel>User Accounts>Advanced Tab>Manage Passwords

There are no tabs in the User Accounts nor is there anything that indicates a Passwords Manager. Is this a feature that needs be turned on if it isn’t present?

Bruce, Here’s a KB article that describes the functionality: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?…;EN-US;q281660&[/url]. Basically, if you’re using XPH or XPP in a workgroup there is no advanced tab. The advanced tab is only available on XPP in a domain.

Thanks, Joe.

In this case, I was attempting to turn off the auto-sign on in Messenger. Now, the issue here isn’t so much I want to do that (I was actually helping someone else), but rather, this directive is from MS site for regular users of XPH/XPH. I can’t recall the other reason I was looking for this advanced tab, but I do recall it was for something relatively mundane as well. Why do you suppose MS would point one in that direction with inaccurate info. in the Messenger case?

There is an explanation of this in general Help and Support if you search “Manage Passwords”: When you go there, you can expand the categories “on a domain” or “not on a domain”:

To manage passwords stored on the computer
Windows allows you to store the different user names and passwords you use to access resources on a network, another computer, or the Internet in one place: Stored User Names and Passwords.

The steps to perform this task differ depending on whether your computer is a member of a network domain or is part of a workgroup (or is a stand-alone computer).

My computer is on a domain

You must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group in order to complete this procedure. If your computer is connected to a network, network policy settings may also prevent you from completing this procedure.

Open User Accounts in Control Panel.
On the Advanced tab, in Passwords and .NET Passports, click Manage Passwords.
You can now add a user name and password you use to access a resource, or edit or remove an existing entry.

My computer is not on a domain

The steps to perform this task differ depending on the type of user account you have.

If you have a computer administrator account

Under Related Tasks located on the left side of the window, click Manage my network passwords.

I found this same article in a search yet glossed right over a key part here. For the purpose I was intending here, this seems to fit the bill. Thank you. This gets me halfway to the point of understanding this at least.

Bruce, Looks like the help is for XPP in a domain. Probably just an oversight on the differences. Take a look at this article and see if it won’t do what you want –
