• An error log is being created.

I use Word 97 and Word 2000 (depending on who I am creating templates for) and run Windows 2000. Sometimes I get the following error message:

winword.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows.
You will need to restart the program.

An error log is being created.

Does anyone know what this error log is called and where it might be stored?

Fairly certain the problem lies with Windows 2000. This query needs to be posted on that Board; you may have a better chance of getting a solution.

I would suspect that any error log would have the file extension .log and be stored in either :Windows or :WindowsSystem or :WindowsTemp. So you could try using Finf Files (*.log) and see if you locate any suspect. That would be especially useful just after the error message is generated as you would then know the time and date of the file.

      Worth a try

To view the error log on Win 2k, Start/Programs/Administrative Tools/Event Viewer. May be slightly different on other OSes.

Hi everyone, found the event viewer but none of the logs in it made any sense. Also found plenty of *.log files by doing a search and once again – not a lot of sense to them.

I’ll look again next time Word crashes on me.

I’m pretty sure the Word error log ends up in a file called drwtsn32.log

For me, details of crashes are getting appended to the log so the latest one is at the end of the file.

It’s contents are pretty much unintelligble to me but if you speak Stack Dump I’m sure they make perfect sense.
