I have recently begun to get this error message “An error occurred while browsing files” on all my websites when I want to make a hyperlink to a different website.

The procedure is, Insert Hyperlink | click on the Browse the Web button | and then I get the error message.

Has anyone ever encountered this issue before? If so, how did you solve it.

It is making it rather difficult to add hyperlinks!

Can you open the other website in your browser OK?

If so, can you paste the link from your browser’s address bar into the hyperlink field?

        Leif,

I can open the other website in my browser [either IE 6 or Firefox 2].

FP has never allowed me to cut and paste anything into the hypertext box when I want to add a link.

You can’t paste a URL into the Address field as below?

            Lief,
Sorry for the delay; I was on holiday.

No, I cannot paste anything into the address field. It will allow me to hand-enter a URL, though.

Below is the error message I get when I try to “browse the web” [using the globe icon, top right] in order to insert a hyperlink.

What happens if you temporarily set Internet Explorer as your default browser?

            • #1090553

              Hans,

              Brilliant!

Yes, that solves the issue quite nicely. So, it looks as if I will have to reset my default browser whenever I use FrontPage. And when I’m done, set it back to Firefox.

Thank you for your help. You too, Lief!

You may want to consider upgrading to Microsoft® Expression® – web. It is a much better product than FrontPage capable of easily producing a standards based web site. You could upgrade for in the USA for $99.00 USD.

Interesting. I have FF set as my default but don’t have that problem.

Rather than the faff involved with changing your default browser, you may find either the IE View or IE Tab extensions more convenient.

BTW – what version of Firefox are you running?

              Leif,

I’ve been playing around with the two IE extensions. I’ve used the IE View in the past but never the IE Tab – which is pretty neat! And much more useful, I think, than IE View. Sadly, using neither of them works for solving my problem. BTW – I use Firefox 2.0.0.11

I have found a quicker work-around though that doesn’t require re-setting my default browser. I open IE and surf to whatever site I will use for a hyperlink. Then, back in FP, I click on the hyperlink shortcut and open the hyperlink context box. Then, I alt-tab to IE, then alt-tab back to FP and the link appears in the proper box.

There is a lot of extra work doing this and I know there is, or at least ought to be, a more efficient way to do it. Maybe I will find out about it some day!

Meantime, I’m happy and I don’t have to deal with that silly error message.

If I ever figure out what caused the problem in the first place, I’ll come back to this thread and post the solution.

A painless solution would be to leave IE as your default browser. evilgrin
