As usual – will download, install, notice there’s no performance improvement and call it a day :).

I assume the Download Tool will be updated on Monday?

But it’s going to give you back more of your time!

        • #187856

Yeah, I’m sure :). Honestly, my home desktop is now more of a game console than the computer. I do 99% of my work on company laptop. So basically my time spent in Windows is boot time + clicking Thunderbird/Firefox/game shortcut. I need to move my e-mail checking and web browsing to Ubuntu completely.

The less maintenance of the system itself, the more time for me. And we know W10 maintenance is not that easy… I haven’t been touching my W8.1 installation for quite a long time.

I was wondering – with all the feature updates and so on – is there an official MS Windows 10 User’s Manual that is updated with each version?

“…we’ve focused on delivering the most modern and most secure operating system.”

Notice they say nothing of ‘reliability’?

And what exactly do they mean by the “most modern?”  Are they suggesting that an OS that just sat there and ran programs and didn’t try to get up on stage and steal the spotlight itself is somehow less than modern?

Its going to give back time due to the undisclosed and unremediated bugs in the system timekeeping functions!  But don’t worry,  the many re-re-re-re-patches to fix it will be coming soon.

    • #187866

It will be available for download…Does this mean that it won’t forcibly be crammed down our throats or does that part come latter ? The new features look nice, but I think they should concentrate on getting the old ones working better before throwing any new problems on the pile.

      • #187877

It will “dribble” out.  It will be offered up to machines slowly as the system is deemed to be ready for it.  They will rely on machine feedback (that’s telemetry) to let them know how fast or how slow to push out the update.  It won’t be forcibly crammed down at this time.

It doesn’t matter when. Eventually MS will spam it onto your machine unless you resist. Still on 1511. Waiting for something really bad to happen to my computer. Like someone breaking into my machine. Like someone uploading malware to my machine. Like someone tracking everything I do. Like someone looking into all of my files.

Oh wait – MS already does that.

Consultant tip:  https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 If you want a copy of 1709 and your clients do not use Enterprise this is your last chance to download 1709 and park that ISO somewhere.

I tried this after reading this to find that the media creation tool is producing a “Windows 10 S” (streamlined) version of 1709 (as shown using “dism /Get-WimInfo /WimFile:F:\sources\install.esd /index:1” on the mounted iso – drive F).

Is there a way to force the tool to create a Windows 10 Pro version of the iso (to match my installed system)?

        • #187974

Since 1709, MCT produced ISO will contain all cunsomer editions, Cloud (S), Home, Home Single Language, Pro
with N variant editions as well, if they are supported by language os ESD/ISO

… and even if you get Win10 S, you’ll still be able to upgrade to Pro for free, for several more months anyway (until Microsoft changes the terminology).

            • #189403

Did Microsoft again extend the end date of the free upgrade from Windows 10 S to Windows 10 Pro? When I shopped online for laptops in early April, I found an article that said the end date had been extended to March 31, 2018 (except for PCs that are priced $799, or whatever, and up).

    • #187872

Doesn’t seem to matter how they name these Feature Updates there’s always confusion.  I’ve seen a comment on the web asking why the new Windows is dated 10 April 2018 Update.  They pointed out that 10 April 2018 was over two weeks ago!

    • #187889

Ditching the make believe name stuff was a smart idea but I still think they should have left the versioning (1511, 1603, 1609, 1703, 1709, 1803) or changed it to a 10.1, 10.2, 10.3 scheme.

While this is a name easier to understand for the computer illiterate out there, it also opens up a new can of worms. “Hey man, did you get the Windows 10 April 2018 update yet?” ‘Yeah, my PC updated weeks ago on Patch Tuesday.’ [rolleyes]

In any event – here’s your friendly reminder to batten down the hatches and lock your Win10’s down if you want to stay where you are.

Perhaps it should have been called ‘Windows 10 Blooming 18 Update’ (seasonal). Anyone can then use it in any context/ tone they see fit.

Windows - commercial by definition and now function...
      • #188532

Seems like it ought to be 1704 though, if they’re building April into the name.

        • #188533

          Did you mean 1804?

          • #188535

Was just about to correct Noels post for him, and yes I think he means 1804.

    • #187884

Just wondering why it’s called ‘April’ update. Surely ‘May’ update when most victims will be receiving it?

    • #187902

… we want to give you back some of your greatest currency, your time.

For this, M$ is touting her new Timeline feature as the main time-saving feature. Timeline is just a fancy expansion of your browser history.

If M$ truly wants to give Win 10 users their time back, she should stop forcing her rapid twice-per-year upgrades and, lengthy auto-updates and restarts on them, esp Win 10 Home users. M$ should also stop hogging their CPU, RAM, hard-drive usage and Internet bandwidth when updating and/or collecting Telemetry & Data.

      • #188083

Oh thanks, I was wondering what they meant by that. It seemed like a joke where they pretend they understand really well what you would like from Windows and they will give it to you, but then, they don’t!

I’m not sure many normal folks will understand how they will get their time back after waiting for yet another unnecessary feature upgrade to complete.

Timeline is just a fancy expansion of your browser history.

If your browser happens to be Microsoft Edge.  Otherwise, as Woody has said, it’s not even as useful as that.

When did Microsoft ever manage to name something in a meaningful way? (Could be 2018H1 Upgrade.)

Talking of which, how many will understand what Focus Assist is about, as opposed to Quiet Hours?

b: I believe that was WTFCUPFWP

      • #187956

Yeah, I had to watch their video to understand what Focus Assist really is and it has been enhanced from previous versions. Microsoft should have kept the prior name.

    • #187917

“… we want to give you back some of your greatest currency, your time.”

“greatest currency? What a millenial joke term. If MS actually mean ‘priority’ or ‘importance” then it needs to look at stability, privacy and customer control of their own hardware. The MS pronouncements are increasingly just parodies of normal, adult communication.

Really the only thing I know I will have to do. Is uninstall all those apps and games I never ask for or will ever use. Its the only thing memorable about getting Win 10 upgrades.

1 user thanked author for this post.
    • #187931

So the only thing these updates do is give Microsoft some press every six months. Not like most users really care other then please don’t make it break anything I actually use.

      • #187932

With the forced use of Bing/Cortana/Edge they also get ad revenue and a record or your searches.

        • #188160

I’ve done everything I can to stop Cortana. It sill lurks in the background. I don’t use the MS search bar. I use ‘Everything’. Man that is a fast local search tool. I use Chrome for all of my internet searching within that info tracking ad revenue and part-time web browsing software. There are alternatives to MS. Not all good alternatives. But there are some that are useful.

        • #188538

          Forced use? Which edition?

        • #188543

          @ ch100

The preview release limits Timeline to Microsoft Edge, Microsoft Office, and the applications Maps, News, Money, Sports and Weather.

          • #188657

Thank you, but what does this have to do with Timeline?
It was about forced use of certain capabilities.
            Who forces and what?
I was interested more into the type of edition which enforces this and cannot be controlled, mostly interested in Pro than anything else, as I know that Enterprise can be controlled, although it require some effort and knowledge.

            • #188660

2018 April version is supposed to incorporate web search into any search done. That is using Bing which is the Cortana search engine.. I can’t recall now which, but some application (or use of) was to open exclusively in Edge not the default browser.

You have the weekend and perhaps more time to block the feature update, how “nice” of Microsoft.

    • #187962

I was just wondering…forgive my ignorance, but will the update be available through Windows Update on April 30th?  Kind of confused reading some of the articles on the web. Some articles seem to suggest that you can manually install it on Apr 30th, and that it will start coming through Windows Update on Patch Tuesday (May 8th)? Thank you so much!!!

Given this seems to be the standard of MS staff, I’m more worried than excited, about the new release………..

The “time saving” marketing scheme is just a flaming joke. My parents are not tech savvy and even they agree that Windows updates are the most time-consuming endeavours they have ever had to deal with. And enjoy losing even more time trying to troubleshoot issues and rolling back updates when they bork everything! My dad has a Chromebook and, like the Chrome browser itself on desktop, updates are practically invisible; they install quietly and quickly and in less than a minute your entire system is updated and ready to work. Windows, on the other hand, has taken *hours* to update!

My dad loves his Chromebook very much. I should get one too, to follow in his footsteps (although I was the one who suggested it to him). Perhaps I shall get a lot of my time back as well.
