I have Windows 10 for Home.  My metered connection was set to ON and yesterday – Sat 3/6 – my Win10 updates started (I forgot I had it set to 3/6 to look for updates).  Since that time Windows 10 has been looking for updates in a seemingly endless loop.  Even after I turned the metered connection back to OFF.

The next update date I have set is now 3/22 and it still searches for updates.

    2 questions:

1 – When does this stop looking for updates – and/or – how do I get it stop until 3/22

2 – if I have update date set in advanced to 3/22 – can I move the date up to tomorrow so it will look sooner?

    Thanks

Have you tried restarting (NOT shutdown/turn on) your computer?

yes – I tried restart and that didn’t work, so i tried shut down which didn’t do the trick either.

I have my metered set to NO and the date to look for updates set to 3/22 now – so it shouldn’t run – at least I would think that would be case.

Windows Updates in service.msc is set to “Automatic” – is this causing the problem?

I just checked, and my Windows Update service is set to Manual (Trigger Start).

BUT, I have the Pro edition of Windows 10, not the Home edition, so I have certain settings in Group Policy enabled that aren’t accessible in Windows 10 Home. Some of these settings might be able to be able to be duplicated by settings within the registry if you’re willing to take the plunge. They can be found in AKB2000016.

: Would it be a good idea at this point for @blueboy714 to “reset” the Windows Update “stack” to see if that stops WU from repeatedly scanning for updates?

Update – at some point it stopped looking for updates – and is now set to look for updates tomorrow.

I’m still curious about the services.msc setting for Windows Updates

      Thanks

The Windows Update service should be set to Manual (Trigger Start) as above.

It wouldn’t hurt to reset the Update queue anyway

the date to look for updates set to 3/22 now

Do you mean you paused updates until then?
If so, WU will not check for updates or download them until then.

Setting metered on and resuming will cause WU to check and the updates will then sit in the queue waiting for you to allow download.

      cheers, Paul

one more question – should the metered connection be set to ON for Wi-Fi or Ethernet or both to prevent updates from happening too soon?

        both

it depends on which connection you use the most; either WiFi or ethernet/LAN

but to be safe, set both wifi AND ethernet connections to metered – I do this on ALL my PCs running Win8.1 & Win10

Thanks – that’s what I did last time but I forgot to turn one of them OFF so my Windows Updates weren’t installing, but I got it resolved before Susan set MS-DEFCON back to 2.
