Hello. Unable to D/L this Malware app lately. Anybody else ?

AskWoody LoungerJanuary 14, 2016 at 7:09 am #1547251RG, hello. Thanks for your message with a “here”.
I finally was able to D/L on the Lenovo and grabbed the connection to also D/L the 64 bit version, then moved it to the Acer and did its trick there. All this on IE v.11.
Seems there is a flood of request for this app and MS server might be DDoS. Might be ???All fine wishes. Jean.

AskWoody_MVPJanuary 13, 2016 at 2:10 pm #1547113Adblock Plus was going berserk on your link, RG and produced the Internet Explorer has stopped working pop up.
This also occurred on a Googled link.
I haven’t tried it in Safe Mode with Networking.
Sudo,
I no longer use ABP as I’ve switched to uBlock a while back and like it better.
Try disabling ABP and see if that works.
HTH

AskWoody LoungerJanuary 13, 2016 at 4:39 pm #1547136I have uBlock Origin on Firefox as it is supposed to better that the other.
The reason I have ABP on IE is that I wasn’t aware uBlock was compatible with IE – but I’ll give it a try after first trying your link after uninstalling ABP.
Your link isn’t the only site that has recently given me Internet Explorer has stopped working, so perhaps seeing the ABP icon bouncing while trying to connect has nailed down a possible cause for that.
EDIT – No, that didn’t work – just getting the busy while trying to connect – using OpenDNS at the moment because of similar with other sites using Google’s DNS servers, but don’t have any problems with most other websites.

AskWoody MVPJanuary 13, 2016 at 5:37 pm #1547140Live msert.exe links ~135/137MB:
The original uBlock was sold on, the new owner (chrisaljoudi ?) then seemed to cease development. The original dev, gorhill, then released uBlock Origin, which is based on his original version but is still very actively developed. Wiki article.

AskWoody MVPJanuary 13, 2016 at 6:30 pm #1547154.. but isn’t this similar to the MRT that we get updates for each month and can be run from Start – type mrt then press enter, although it does have a slightly different name.
I think it’s probably a full roll-up of MRT, which is usually smaller and more ‘topical’ to the main threats detected during the month preceding release?
EDIT: just checked my MRT size and it might be that msert is the last MRT + any recent additions – still not sure though 🙂

AskWoody_MVPJanuary 13, 2016 at 7:07 pm #1547171Sudo,
Don’t use IE except for sites that will only work properly with it. According to Extreme Tech site it doesn’t work on IE. HTH

That’s 4 months old and ublock Origin has been updated many times since then.
EDIT: Ah, I see what you mean now – there isn’t a version of uBlock for IE.

AskWoody LoungerJanuary 14, 2016 at 4:38 am #1547238Hi! No one really cares what I think, but does any one use AD-Muncher? It works well for me!
AD-Muncher is now free!
https://www.admuncher.com/Don’t put yourself down 🙂
I’ve never heard of AD-Muncher but I’ve already put ABP back on, so that will do me for now

AskWoody_MVPJanuary 14, 2016 at 6:02 pm #1547383The official donwload page often experiences excessive amounts of traffic. Other issues can also prevent downloading or even viewing the download page. IE 11 works best for a browser both for the page and for the download. If still having issues, try this:
https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/protect/forum/protect_scanner-protect_start/the-link-to-the-microsoft-safety-scanner-page-is/c5ea756d-4ab4-49c1-ac90-13e5090ce7c8
Direct download link for 32-bit:http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=212733
[/url]
Direct download link for 64-bit: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=212732
These direct download links have worked for me even in browsers which cannot access the usual MSERT download page for some reason(s). A lot of people have reported this issue, so no one need feel specially cursed if you experience temporary or ongoing issues with this download.Over my slow DSL connection, I have to download during off-peak hours. Or go to a public network and download from there, if it isn’t blocked by the network administrator(s).
It is my opinion that MSERT has the full definitions, just like Windows Defender, and uses a similar if not identical scanning engine. Someone can correct me if I am wrong. The main difference seems to be that there are no active components in MSERT, unlike Windows Defender, which does have active components.
I use MSERT as a second-opinion scanner along with Malwarebytes and my main defense, AVG Free. I feel well protected with full system scans monthly and quick scans in between with all three tools. I use MSERT in both my 32-bits Windows 10 (formerly Windows 8.1) tablet and my full laptop running Windows 10 Pro (formerly Windows 7 Home Premium). This tool worked well for me in all of these environments. And it occasionally will catch malware, so it does in fact do something good.

AskWoody LoungerJanuary 16, 2016 at 3:57 pm #1547633You’re quite right Bob, MSERT uses the same engine and full definition set as Windows Defender and Microsoft Security Essentials. Because of this some consider it redundant if you’re already using WD or MSE, howevr if either one has been disabled by malware MSERT (having no “active components”) can be downloaded to a flash drive on a clean machine and then used on the infected machine in Safe Mode to hopefully remove the infection.
