I am using Firefox, really can not remember last time I used IE.
Is anybody using Chrome? Is it even worth trying?
    Thanks, Barnnie

      Welcome to the Lounge!

I use Internet Explorer 8 as my main browser, but I use both Firefox (3.5 currently) and Chrome for testing purposes.

Chrome is a good browser; it’s certainly worth a try. I like its mimimalistic interface and speed, but I’m not sure I’d use it as my main browser. Firefox is much more customizable, for instance.

You can install and run several browsers side by side, so why not give Chrome a spin?

      Welcome to Woody’s Lounge!

I agree with Hans. Go ahead and install Chrome, it won’t hurt anything. Just don’t tell it to be your default browser. You can run IE, Fx AND Chrome on the same machine without any “interference” one with the other.

        I’m a new newbie in Woody’s Lounge.
I’m running Netscape 4 (with Java and Javascripts disabled for Safe —well! safer—Surfing) and 8
        IE8
        FF 3.5.3
        Google Chrome and
        Opera

Without being able to pinpoint features exactly, some sites and/or searches,
somehow, feel better or more “right” with one or another.

I use all of the above browsers except DeepNet. I also have used Flock. Can’t remember why I stopped. I’ve played with Safari a bit too (although, from a PC). I use multiple browsers at the same time because I compartmentalize my browsing like I do my filing. I can only access one Yahoo Account per browser, and I have 3 Yahoo e-mail addresses to check. Then one is basically for Facebook stuff, another is for commercial pursuits, etc.

I D/L Chrome and it seems to be working.
Will play with it now and then.
      FF still my main browser.

Why not give the Deepnet Browser a try? Firefox is good but there are times when it is not possible to access all the features of some banks, and it is good to use another browser other than IE, which is constantly under attack from hackers.

Personally, I am concerned that this product has not been updated in three years. Perhaps its design is perfect and no flaws have been discovered during that time, but … that seems optimistic. The Deepnet Explorer browser appears to be built on top of the components of IE installed on the user’s system, so hopefully as long as you keep IE patched up, you will avoid serious problems with Deepnet.

I have MS Explorer (hated it and still do) and was using Avant browser – which worked. I then downloaded Chrome and found it to be excellent for my use, i.e. minimalist user interface and fast (at least until recently but that’s another story).

Well Barnnie I’m using it and I like. Is it better then Firefox? Probably not. It loads pages a little faster and there are less people using it. I like the absence of a tool bar, you will find everything you need in the upper right hand corner to customize it and make it do what you want. And I especially like the incognito page function. Is it worth trying; Sure, your always learning you might as well enjoy it. It’s the only reason I’m here to learn.

    • #1187822

I use Chrome (the developers version) as my default browser and love it, It does everything the others do, but faster. If there’s ever anything it can’t render properly, you can always use another browser, but I rarely have to use anything else.

    • #1188088

Chrome is a great browser, but it has 2 distinct problems.

[*]Install – Chrome only installs to your Documents and Settings Directory. This is a real problem since this is the last place you want anything installed. There is a portable version of Chrome (portableapps.com) that will give you the option of installing it anywhere.
[*]Spyware – Google creates a unique for every download of Chrome. So It makes your computer/browsing more identifiable than before. You need to download and run UnChrome in order to better anonymize your browsing.

I have 11 different browsers installed on my system at the current time. Many of these I use for development/design purposes only. I have both the stable Chrome version and the beta – both are the portable version and I’ve used unchrome on them.

Two more Chrome deal breakers for me and for a lot of users:

No Google toolbar for Google’s own browser!

      I can’t live without Firefox Add-ons:

        [*]Xmarks
        [*]Tab Mix Plus
        [*]FlashBlock
        [*]Evernote web clipper

I thought Xmarks works with any browser now, although I gave up on it and now use delicious.com – much, much better.
I still use FF as my primary browser and couldn’t do without tabmixplus! The other plugin I use a lot is roboform, which has been a problem recently because I’m testing the beta of FF3.6 and it doesn’t support roboform :-(. If you define Chrome as your default browser, Roboform will work with it.

You can get the Roboform adapter for Firefox 3.6 from http://www.roboform….browser_mozilla
Roboform state it is compatible with versions up to Firefox 3.7a1pre
I have not tested this since I do not use Roboform.

Roboform is good. Have used it for a long time successfully with IE and Firefox. I’m also using Lastpass. Excellent!! I must say. Syncs smoothly with IE, Firefox, Chrome, and Android.

Hi Tom….I just started using Chrome….FF kept hanging on me or it wouldn’t open (saying that it was already open…and forcing me to shut down and re-boot)….however, will Roboform work in Chrome simply by saying it is my default browser? Secondly, in IE7or IE8, I can open pdf files using Adobe Reader…but when I try it in Chrome, it opens Acrobat’s full version (whihc takes a long time, espec if all I want to do is read a small pdf file)…….will my file associations return to normal if I select Chrome as my default? Lastly, do you know how to import all my favorites from IE to Chrome? Thanks for your help./

I can’t answer about Chrome, but for Firefox failing to shut down correctly, check out these articles:

With Chrome as your default browser it should popup the same dialogue you see in FF or IE. I have one setup where chrome is default and one where FF is default in both setups chrome views PDFs without any problem (I have Acrobat full version on my computer)

In terms of importing bookmarks there are a number of solutions. If you are not using xmarks (don’t even know if that works in IE), or delicious.com – which I think is the best solution, then you can export your bookmarks as an html file and import them from the manage bookmarks screen in chrome. Although if I recall correctly, chrome offers to imports setting including bookmarks as long as your other browsers are closed.

Personally, I like Chrome very much. I can understand the add-ons you have come to love in FF. But, please don’t complain about “no google toolbar”. Chrome doesn’t need one. Just type your search term in the address bar and you automatically get your google search results.

If you use Google as your default search engine and you do more than 10 searches per day, you have to love that searching is a one-step process. With IE or Firefox, you have to open the browser, go to google.com or enable the google search bar (which takes up real estate). with Chrome, you open, type your search query in the address bar, and you are already at google with your search results.

Not a huge difference, but in my world, it is very convenient.

Perhaps I’ve misunderstood you, but with Firefox search is a one-stop process. I have a search bar on the same toolbar as the place where one puts in URLs (the Navigation Bar). It’s also where my Reload, Stop, Home, and Print icons are. So there’s no extra real estate required. All I do is put my search term(s) in the search bar and I can search–no need to go to google.com. Moreover, with the search bar, I can choose any number of places to run my search: Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo, Bing & Google (compared), Mozilla Add-ons, Yahoo, Amazon, WordReference.com, and more, as you wish.

I might note that Firefox is still my default browser, mostly because like many other folks here, I depend on some of the add-ons. I’ve also got IE8 (which I rarely use) and Opera 10.60 (I use Opera as my secondary browser. If it had FF’s add-ons, I’d make it my default browser, since it’s MUCH faster than FF).

One feature I don’t care about is a way to synchronize my bookmarks, since I use Linkman as my bookmark manager (and Powermarks before that). Linkman works with most browsers, so that no matter which browser I’m using, my bookmarks are always at hand.

    • #1188425

I use SRWare Iron, which is essentially chrome without the google affiliation. It uses the chromium source code, but doesnt have any of the extra “spyware” google puts in chrome. Additionally it also uses the latest webkit engine, which i don’t think chrome uses yet (I havent checked of late though).

For me, i couldnt live without adblock plus, and so was stuck with firefox and its slow start up times for quite a while (this was helped a little by firefox preloader which holds the main part of FF in memory so when you start it its mostly already loaded). However, now i use privoxy which basically sets up a proxy on your computer that removes all the banners, ads and other crap. Then you run your browser through it (127.0.0.1:8118 by default) and youre set to go.

With that issue gone, i found it was just a matter of finding which browser im most comfortable with. I used opera for a while and i enjoyed that immensely, but i prefer the minimalistic interface and speed of chromium. I find for casual browsing, it matches my needs perfectly, and if i really need something more advanced/the chromium cant do, i can always start up one of the other browsers.

    • #1188476

@Alan, that is _really_ awesome, thanks. I can see this becoming a big part of my browsing

    • #1188525

I started using Chrome as my main browser in the last few months and I am loving it. It renders 99% of the websites I go to correctly and it is super fast. The only reason I need to fall back to Firefox is for my online banking. For some reason, that site doesn’t respond well. Not sure if it’s the https or something more than that. One thing I love is the application shortcuts. You can create basically a stand alone app for any web page, such as gmail or google voice or anything. I honestly haven’t touched IE in a very long time. I know Firefox will do it all and I am very happy with what Chrome will do.

    • #1188931

I use Chrome almost exclusively for on-line radio/tv, etc.
It’s minimalism gets me there and without injecting any other “things” in the way of that task alone.

Hi Tom…thanks for that….I did some looking around and Roboform is working on an add-in for Chrome…they have something for Chromium, so I’ll juts wait a bit for Chrome…..as far as the pdfs go, I have Acrobat (full version) and Reader……I prefer to open pdfs with Reader (as it opens faster) and have set that up in my file associations. Then, if I want to create, edit a pdf, I use Acrobat……when I click on a pdf in FF or IE, the file opens using Reader….in Chrome, it opens using Acrobat…..is there a way to have a pdf open in Chrome, using Reader?

Hi guys – I’m new to the Lounge but really – hasn’t anyone used Maxthon? It’s a front end for IE. I love it because I need to look at lots of news sources each evening. They are saved as Groups, which open together in tabs – as many as your memory can do – and its stable. Lots of skins and plugins available. Yes, I suppose it suffers from the usual IE vulnerabilities but I’ve had no problems.

Tried Chrome but it wouldn’t do what I need. Firefox won’t open enough tabs. Maxthon does it for me – http://www.maxthon.com/.

      Cheers

I use Maxthon when I need to use IE. Remember that Maxthon only uses the version of IE on your computer, no more no less. What I’m really baffled by is the statement that Firefox wouldn’t open enough tabs. I’ve had FF open 83 tabs at a time – never tried more – are you saying you need more than that?

Hi Brear…thank you for that. I downloaded Maxthon…it works like a charm….when you say it is a ‘front end’ for IE, does that mean that it is really just a ‘facade’ for IE..or is it a genuine, stand-alone browser?

You can think of IE as a set of program components that programmers can use to create a variety of different browsers. Maxthon uses the components of IE, and should render pages the same way as IE.

        More background on Maxthon: http://wiki.maxthon.com/index.php/What_is_Maxthon

I used to use FF, but gave up on it with v3.5 (??) because it was always hanging, or refusing to shut down…or wouldn’t open b/c it hadn’t shut down…..I tried to fix it but couldn’t so removed it and anything associated with it….went back to IE v7….which works much better than FF……Maxthon seems like a god-sedn compared to the problems I had with FF and even tho it seems to be based on IE, it works better than IE……I really want to try Chrome, but won’t bother with it till there is a Roboform add-in for Chrome (hopefully, soon).

    • #1192035

Have been using Chrome since its inception and currently am using 4.0.249.30. For years I used My IE2 which I loved until it became Maxthon which did not work properly for me but I still have My IE2 on my system.

Chrome is extremely fast and does downloads faster than any other browser I have tried and there are few I have not tried.

Only thing I don’t like about Chrome and perhaps another user knows the solution, is that when receiving an attachment via email such as .pdf, .pps or .wmv, the run option is not available and so each file has to be saved and then run from the saved location which is just unnecessary steps. I would rather view the file, and save if desired.

It took awhile but Chrome did finally solve the sorting of bookmarks and importing and exporting but some third party programs were also created to solve the problem.

Overall, Chrome is a great Browser and is my Default browser,

    • #1192054

I’m currently using Chrome 4.0.223.16 beta portable edition. I don’t have a solution to your problem. The only downside to using the portable edition is that you can’t create application shortcuts (actually you can create them they just don’t work). In my opinion this is preferable to having Chrome installed in the Documents and settings directory which is how the non-portable versions work.

Have you tried the internal bookmark sync – I see it in the beta but haven’t tried it yet. Also don’t forget to use unchrome : http://www.abelssoft.net/unchrome.php

    • #1192494

I’ve been using Chrome for two months now. It’s very fast compared to IE but I’ve also noted a lot of minor annoyances. When working with certain forums (Yuku for example) many of the editor features are not visible in Chrome. I also don’t much like how it handles historical links or ‘find in page’. I spend a lot of time in Yuku. It’s a dealbreaker for me.

    • #1194142

I mainly use IE8, with Google Toolbar, have been trying Chrome for the past two weeks, and although fast, and simple to use, I miss the Translation facility of Google Toolbar.
When this is available for Chrome, I might start using it again.

    • #1196603

I agree with Chris. I am very invested in FF, but with google being the default search and it works from the location bar, it’s a no brainer on my part. I use Chrome portable because it allows me to install it anywhere including my USB (portableapps.com) and unchrome to get rid of the serial number in every download of chrome. I’ve installed a bunch of plugins for google wave, google mail notifier, adblock, etc. Chrome is still the fastest browser around and with bookmarks sync you don’t need xmarks (I personally prefer delicious.com, but I do both).

    • #1207092

well folks, Chrome 4.0 has been officially released on their web site recently.
pretty good now that it makes use of Google Extensions which are addons almost similar to Firefox.
Chrome is still missing a Print Preview feature, which other browsers like IE/Firefox/Opera/Seamonkey/Netscape have. I’m not printing web pages at all from Chrome w/out Print Preview.

After reading all the praise about Chrome, I tried to install it. Error 102. Then I tried the special procedures using C:test to install: Error 102. Then I used the MS Process Explorer procedure described on the Google page and it installed as admin. Tried to submit the MS Process Explorer PML file, but encountered “page not available” at Google. Then I tried to install Chrome as User: Error 102. Then I uninstalled Chrome, only to find a lot of litter left behind. Expand.exe is in Sytem32. I don’t think Chrome is ready for prime time.

I started using Chrome so that I could have all of my bookmarks synced across all of my devices (desktops, netbook, Android) somewhat painlessly. There are times I find myself running back to the comfort of Firefox but 98% of the time I am using Chrome.
