“My brother’s girlfriend’s cousin and his family were caught in their vehicle in Maui while the wildfires suddenly erupted around them.

No cell service, so Apple Emergency SOS was the only way they could get in contact with first responders. Literally saved their lives.”

Lives saved because the car did not catch fire and they had time to call for help. Fire is completely unpredictable so they were just lucky. Many were not.

      cheers, Paul

They had been lucky using iPhone 14 which has satellite support where there was no cellular connection.

A good result… and a plus for Apple IMO, even though I can’t afford their flagship devices.

Many lives lost, sad to hear the reports on this horrific fire. Any life saved is a blessing, and when technology such as Apple’s satellite emergency app kicks into play, that’s good news amongst the ruins. Have been watching the news closely and seeing families scrambling from one end of the island to another, pedal to metal, to avoid unpredictable fire behavior. From what I could see, there wasn’t much clearing, and low visibility. Glad these folks you mentioned using the SOS service were able to be rescued, hope there is some relief soon. Having been caught up in monster fires here in California, there is no fear greater when surrounded by mile high flames. This Apple SOS service will continue to save lives, it should be a widespread addition by all manufacturers of cell devices.

Only free for 2 years? Forced obsolescence?
