aspi layer problem (XP)

Since my son uninstalled Roxio EZ CD Creator 5, our CD and CDRW drives have disappeared from Windows Explorer. I ran ASPICHK and it said the four files were not found, (or was it “layer missing”). I have tried several times to run the install.bat (with “XP32” and even “force” switches) from ADAPTEC’s site. Two of the four ASPI layer files are now identified when I run ASPICHK, but the other 2 are still missing.

I don’t know what ASPICHK is and I don’t have it on my system. Sounds like a SCSI driver checker of some kind. Are your drives of the SCSI variety? You didn’t say if you installed something in place of Roxio or whether or not the machine has been rebooted since. One thing you could try is to right-click My Computer and select Manage. Look in Device Manager, like the attachment, and see if the drives are shown. Often, if you right-click and remove the device, WinXP will “re-discover” it upon reboot, if you care to give that a try. But, before you do, be sure you have any required driver files for the two drives in case XP needs to see them.

Since Roxio s/w was removed, we have been unable to install anything from CD.

In device manager I get exclamation marks on the CD and CDRW drives with the following message:

“Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)”

The cable _is_ properly connected, so I think it is an “ASPI layer” problem.

I found this in my files, dated October 1999. Don’t know if it helps?

Download our ASPICHK utility to determine the version on your ASPI files. If the version you have is earlier than 4.60 (1021), download and run the ASPI32.EXE utility from Adaptec’s FTP site.

Four years later, if you go to the Adaptec website and stick ASPI into their search engine, you will find “Windows ASPI drivers version v4.71.2”, which might well be what you need to replace the files removed by the naughty Roxio uninstall.

Let us know if this works or not. Roxio has a reputation for destroying CD-ROM access, at least in my experience. If this doesn’t work, you can also try an in-place upgrade (installing Windows over itself) to see if it can be corrected.
