Backing up .pst – “can’t read from source file or disk”

I routinely back up my .pst file by copying it to an external drive on my home network. This has worked fine for years. Today, when I tried to copy the .pst file, I received an error message saying “cannot read from the source file or disk”. However, the backup copy that I had was deleted. So, now I have no backup at all. The file works fine in Outlook.

Can anyone here provide some advice on how to address this error?

Try ScanPST (Inbox Repair tool).

Have you closed Outlook properly – check in Task Manager.
Always keep more than one copy of a backup file. You can append the date and time post copy.
