I decided to try the Windows 7 Backup, but I can’t open the Backup and Restore Center, whether I go via Start, and type in Backup, or via the Control Panel
    “Backup and Restore”.
Can anyone suggest how I can rectify this problem. There may be a simple answer but it’s got me bluffed.

Yes, it is in Control Panel, but when looking for such things the quick way is to type what you want into the Search Box that opens directly above the Start Button every time you click on it. Here, for good luck, is a little Backup Tutorial from Microsoft.

That is exactly what I did. I cannot open it by either method.

My apology, I somehow misread your post to mean the exact opposite of what it says. (It’s been a bad day.)

I recently performed a backup and image of one computer with no trouble at all, so it looks like you do have a problem, and I’m not sure I can help with it.

I can say that I have System Mechanic Pro (10.1.1) on the computer, but that is an entire suite and you can use it for a lot or a little, and I do not use it to repair my registry, amongst other things.

The obvious question is this: Do you already have a backup that might allow you to try to compare or restore the backup program itself (complete with registry settings)?

Thats ok, I have those days quite frequently. I did have Acronis True Image installed and it was a waste of time. I uninstalled it using Revo Uninstaller. The Backup and Restore may have not worked from the start, as I have never tried it before, and this computer is only a few months old. I guess I will have to try another Backup programme.

I saw that when I did a search but it doesn’t help. Thanks anyway.

I am afraid reading and absorbing the information in the Events Log is beyond my Computer knowledge!!

Check through your services to ensure “volume shadow copy” is enabled and running. Acronis, if previously installed may have turned the service off.
      Run: services.msc

Should that be on Automatic or Manual. Just got a list but it doesn’t say whether it is enabled or not.? Tab to Start,. and drop down where it can be either Automatic, Manual, or Disabled. Not quite sure what I do.?

      Two questions come to mind:

How are you fixed for restore points? These can be undone if you restore to an earlier configuration, and if you can think of anything that might have messed up the native Windows Backup you might restore to a point prior to that to get it right.

If the native Backup is messed up without your ever having used it, then your entire installation is of questionable value, which is to say that you might need to get serious about the state of your entire operating system. Did you make a repair disk? There is also the matter of your having had Acronis installed and then uninstalling it. The version may matter, but if you made even a single backup that you still have it’s a simple enough matter to boot Acronis from CD and see if you can’t do something about restoring Windows own Backup.

Having one Windows application that you have never used fail to work makes it look like Windows itself may be corrupt. I advise against looking for an alternative when the default is out of order for reasons unknown. You say the system is only a few months old, and it’s a pain in the neck to do it but you can surely copy all of your data and re-install everything, updates included, to get it right. If it’s part of your system and it isn’t working now is the time to do it, before you have even more applications and data.

I should also mention that you can use your installation disk for Repair mode: specify the Language option, then when prompted to Install select Repair Mode instead. You may be stuck with re-installing upgrades, but at least you will should have your system back.

That is all a bit beyond my computing capabilities. What about the idea of me reinstalling Acronis. It was working to a certain degree.? I did make a restore disk in Acronis but I guess that wouldn’t work now that I have uninstalled Acronis eh.?

Sure it will work, but it would be safer to boot from the Acronis boot disk if you made one. Once Acronis is up and running, then you will have to navigate to the location of the backup, since Revo will probably have deleted any data about the backups you made. This also takes us back to the question of how long ago you made the backup, and whether you have any restore points since then. (Type restore point in the search box, and you’ll get plenty about that since it’s a part of Windows.)

Yes. I made an Acronis boot disk. I made the backup on 16 December. Thanks for your help.

You do not say what version of Acronis True Image you had, nor what the “waste of time” means. Acronis True Image Home 2010 and 2011 have generally had very favorable reviews in these forums when used with Win 7. I use both 2010 and 2011 with great success, both in creating new Images and restoring from those Images.

When comparing Acronis to Win Backup and Restore I find Acronis much more full featured compared to the bare bones Win 7 Backup and Restore app. Beside Acronis, Macrium Reflectis another Imaging app that has received generally high praise in these forums. Check out the many threads on both in the Security and Backup forum.

I was running Acronis TI 2011. I played with it for about six weeks. Sometimes it would do a scheduled backup other times it didn’t work all. If you look
on the Acronis Forum you will see I am not the only one who was having trouble with it. There are many others who have been having trouble with it.
I run Acronis 2010 on an XP machine and have not had much trouble with it. I personally think it was a waste of money. And now I am having all this trouble after uninstalling it.
I will probably have to pay for professional help to get the problem sorted.

In my previous post I said to check on “Volume Shadow Copy”, also check on “Windows backup” as well.
You could stop and then restart them, and do a system boot. If that doesn’t work, try the system file checker:

Type in the RUN box: “sfc /scannow” without the quotes, and see if the system file checker will repair it.
      OR
Right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator, then type in “sfc /scannow” without the quotes.

What service Windows Backup needs to function properly:
Remote Procedure Call (RPC) (S, HB, HP, P, U, E)
DCOM Server Process Launcher (S, HB, HP, P, U, E)
      RPC Endpoint Mapper (S, HB, HP, P, U, E)

What service Volume Shadow Copy needs to function properly:
Remote Procedure Call (RPC) (S, HB, HP, P, U, E)
DCOM Server Process Launcher (S, HB, HP, P, U, E)
      RPC Endpoint Mapper (S, HB, HP, P, U, E)

      Also
Run your antivirus and antimalware applications for updates, and do a full system scan.

Check the event viewer by typing “eventvwr.msc” in the run box.
look for errors relating to Windows backup and restore not running, near or at the time you tried to run it.

I decided to try the Windows 7 Backup, but I can’t open the Backup and Restore Center

How are you viewing the Control Panel? By Category or by Icons? If by category, then just left-clicking on Back up your computer should open it (and you did say that you can’t open it), but if you are using either of the icon views you must right-click the selection and Run as administrator. Any of the operations in Backup and Restore Center also require you to Run as administrator, which is what the shield symbol to the left an application means.

In Control Panel by Category. Backup and Restore. If I right click I get a widow: Open/Open new window/create shortcut
There is nothing to indicate “administrator”. (Left Click has NO effect) I didn’t know what the shiield symbol meant, so I have learnt something. LOL.

With the results you report, I think we may really be on the track of it, at least to the extent that you definitely have trouble, and others may be able to suggest a cure better than I can. One question I can think to ask is if the icon for System and Security appears as a shortcut (with a curled arrow) or as it looks like the screen shot shown below, and another question is to ask if you have tried any of the other functions under System and Security to see if they work properly.

I do not have an icon for System and Security nor does it appears as shown in your screen shot.
I can get to System and Security by typing it into the Start window and it brings it up.
In that window there are eight headings, starting with “Action Center” and finishing with “Administrative Tools”.
All of them work EXCEPT Backup up and Restore. I am not sure if that makes the problem easier or more complicated.?

I had previously run a Malware program and also I have ESET smart security and have done a scan. I could not get sfc/scannow to run because it required
Administrator which I could not access. As far as the Event Log Viewer goes, I could not see anything obvious there but having said that my computer knowledge is
not that great and I may not be able to interpret it correctly.

I got sfc /scannow to run and there were no integrity violations.

I believe this is an Acronis TI problem, from my reading of the Acronis User Forums. I, too, heard a lot of good reviews of Acronis over the years. My experience, however, in attempting to schedule recurring differential updates with e-mail notifications using both Acronis TI 2010 & 2011 has been completely unproductive, and Acronis has been unable/unwilling to fix this problem over the last 12-1/2 months.

My suspicion is that this involves the “integrate with windows backup” function of Acronis TI, which apparently can persist after Acronis TI has been uninstalled. I have seen this mentioned in the User Form, but have not gone back to try out Windows Backup in my own system, as I am about to install Macrium Reflect, which appears to do almost everything I want it to.

I realize that Ted, especially, has had good results with Acronis TI, but this seems to be mainly with full (not differential or incremental) backups, for which there are many free programs available. I really feel that Acronis TI has gone downhill over the last three iterations, at least compared to the glowing reviews that I used to read. The Paragon product seems quite complicated, at least from a quick study of the instruction manual, ShadowProtect Desktop seems rather expensive, especially where several computers in a home need to be backed up, and Windows Backup seems far too rudimentary for my purposes (though useful in a pinch, especially after a full system rebuild).

My suggestion, after all this verbiage, is to search the Acronis User Forums for “Windows Backup no longer works,” as this would seem to have the best chance of resolving your problem.
