Clawing back a nice thread back on track…… grin

I am quite impressed by this new addition to the gallery. You seem to have a new effect for the sun, it looks like a firework cascading, very clever. Does the effect have a name?

            • #1136791

It’s not a new effect, it’s known as a ‘bliss’ and with patience it can be tweaked from this sort of very wispy appearance to something much more defined. I thought I’d posted other ‘bliss’ images here before.

              Ken

              > I thought I’d posted other ‘bliss’ images here before.

Yes, you have, but posts in PixPlace expire after a while.

      • #1136990

        • #1137068

Hey, someone else who’s brave enough to ask that question!

Hey! I like your red hat!

            • #1137079

            • #1137369

I started this thread so I’m allowed to pirate it. Back to an earlier point…

You never answered Bowlie’s very reasonable question, why are the downs ups?

              Ken

            • #1137375

cool pirate permission received and understood grin

Well, the definition of a Down is an extensive undulating and gently rolling plains, often know as downland in the UK. The South Downs in the south-east of England around Kent and parts of Surrey range from 0 metres above sea level to 294 metres (965 feet) to a fantastic hill call Leith Hill which I have run up and down and is classified as a Marilyn.
A Marilyn is a type of mountain or hill in Great Britain, Ireland or surrounding islands with a relative height of at least 150 metres (492 ft), regardless of absolute height or other merit.

              Wikipedia
So by definition you can run Downs up and Downs down depending where you start

            • #1137380

All very technical but I don’t feel it addresses the key issue of a down being up, must be something to do with their proximity to the Magic Forest.

              Ken
PS There’s a joke in there somewhere about hills above a certain height being known as Marilyns and the peaks in Scotland known as Munros

            • #1137385

Every down is an up for those standing at the bottom, and a down for those at the top. It’s just a matter of perspective.

I’ve got another question – why are the Broads not very? (And I’m not ‘prefering to Marilyns or Munroes)

            • #1137415

          For what it’s worth:

A downland is an area of open chalk hills. This term is especially used to describe the chalk countryside in southern England. Areas of downland are often referred to as Downs.

The word ‘down’ derives from a medieval germanic or norse word โ€” “dun”, a hill. (Wikipedia)

I live just to the east of the river Medway estuary where the river passes through a gap in the north downs which makes me a Man of Kent as opposed to a Kentish man which I would be if I lived the other side of the river.

Oh yeah, nice bliss shot Stuck!

          Regards

          Graeme
