I was just reading the AskWoody Plus newsletter and agree that no email is safe. I always make a point to tell financial institutions not to email me. Nonetheless they do. So I want to get an encryption program. I will need one that does not require the person sending me emails to have an unencrypting system, should I ever reply.

So far I have been careful and fortunate and gotten no malware. I was using MSE on 2 Windows 7 computers but recently switched to Avast Free Antivirus because the MSE updates were getting unpredictable. I currently have a free trial for ExpressVPN but probably won’t keep it. It is always shutting off and re-starting, and a second problem is that several programs won’t open if it is running. Also, it is expensive,  so I will try to find something cheaper. But Susan pointed out that a VPN does not protect people from reading your email so thus I want to add encryption.

All suggestions welcome, even expensive ones.

Big fan of AskWoody. Thank you for all you do!

BTW I am trying to switch to Windows 10. I bought such a machine and it has a chronic problem of suddenly shutting off internet connections. I tried to fix it myself . I also have sent it to a very good IT specialist at the local University 3 times. It will work for awhile and then shut off again. Meanwhile my two 7 machines continue to work without any visible problems.

I’m not sure if it’s even possible unless maybe you send encrypted containers (Think Vera Crypt) as a file attachment.  And then who knows if email providers flag “black box” file attachments as possible nefarious content.

The alternative is, as Susan emphasizes is just don’t email sensitive information.

You can’t exchange encrypted email with others without already having set up a mechanism.
There are ways for corporates to send you encrypted mail and a key to open it, but it costs and ordinary users are unlikely to pay to use.

When I need to send sensitive data I put it in a document and send it via a free 3rd party, like SendSafely.

      cheers, Paul

The receiving end has to install PGP as well.
