Jeff

OMG….I hope it goes before next weekend as I have a night time ultramarathon race. They said the only thing that will stop it is 2 foot of snow or a hurricane nuts

• #1145195

But will it arrive? When I watch the TV weathercasters I wonder sometimes if the’re after an OSCAR!

• #1145196

laugh

As I look out of the window of the log cabin I saw a small flurry of snow, aeroplanes fell from the sky, cars skidded to a halt nearly missing each other and I heard a distant train grind to a halt……drama what drama? This is the south of England we don’t get that softy American stuff here, this is real snow because it comes from Russia evilgrin

Hi Jezza
halt nearly missing each other
Over here the saying goes that “a miss is as good as a mile”. But if you nearly miss hitting my car; your insurance company will be talking to mine. evilgrin

• #1145206

laugh

Yep, just re-read that, it doesn’t make sense does it?

• #1145211

Jezza, Jezza, Jezza,

Are you saying the American’s suffer with whimppy Canadian storms? We canucks can be just as puffy in our parkas!

• #1145227

>Are you saying the American’s suffer with whimppy Canadian storms? We canucks can be just as puffy in our parkas!

Oh don’t start me on the Canadians grin

All I get from the Canadian side of the family is “Shovel the drive this and shovel the drive that” or “just 2 foot last night! yadda

Just remember us Brits when you’re out shovelling your drive next, we get 1 inch of snow…..just remember, Russian snow, which can cripple the whole fright/rail/car/transport infrastructure…..you have it sssooooo easy munch

• #1145335

I wonder if the real reason that traffic has come to a standstill over there is more to do with this story

No More Street Sign Apostrophes in England’s Second-Largest City.

I think they are all just getting lost. confused

• #1145337

Shouldnt that be “No More Street Sign Apostrophes in Englands Second-Largest City”?

hiding Anxiously awaiting the anger of the Lounge pedant…

• #1145362

Perchance the Lounge‘s pedant is snowed in question

• #1145334

I can personally attest to Chris’ claim. We have had way too many storms out of Canada this winter. We are still digging out from our last storm that dropped over 8 inches! Snow fall totals for our little corner of the world are well over 50 inches!

Now Chris maybe you could see about shifting some of this white stuff to Jezza so that he might perform a proper analysis comparing his wimpy Russian made snow versus your much more impressive Canadian snow snow ? Just a thought.

While we are at it if there are any loungers from Hawaii or the south pacific maybe you could shift some of your excess sun towards us so that I can get the ice dams melted offf my roof please

• #1145573

>We have had way too many storms out of Canada this winter. We are still digging out from our last storm

Tsk Tsk!
We are only sending back the crud that comes ” … up the OHIO Valley and should arrive early tomorrow morning…” poke

• #1145576

Yes, how kind of you. It has arrived, started snow this morning about 9:00 am and is expected to finish up some time early tomorrow morning snow. We really appreciate your willingness to share, looking forward to returning the favor at some point bif.

• #1145215

I wouldn’t mind some of that “real snow”. So far this winter has been a bit “wimpy” in my parts of Sweden. True, I have a little snow, and some days were cold. Guess I’ll have to move up north.

Temperatures now, some hour ago 16:00:
Warmest
Location Temp
Kiruna 1,7°C (yep, nuts sort of, it’s in the north (Latitude 67.8,), but we often get it that way; it changes so it can be colder in the south).

Coldest
Location Temp
Särna -23,1°C (Latitude 61.7) This night Särna had -30.4°C, nothing unusual per se, there. I don’t know what the January record is, wait a minute …. eh, ooops, -49,0°C in January 1951 and 1999, and -52,6°C in February 1966. Brrr indeed.

• #1145202

Well, I’ve never been to your country(ies) so I don’t know about the “…North of Britain…” but one thing for sure, 70 mph winds, especially in inclement weather, can be very dangerous. When I lived in Colorado, they called them ground blizzards. Hoping it’s short lived and not too severe.

• #1145214

“… snow could fall as deep as 20cm (7.8in) …”

Oooooohhhh. grin

“… if the’re after an OSCAR!”

laugh True.

But we had some real bad storms in 2005 and 2007 as several other countries. 75 million cubic meters of wood, trees, fell during some hours a night in 2005 in the southern part, and that time they did warn. It had already hit GB and Denmark among other. In 2007 I was on the roads that day, and it took time…

• #1145483

And how was YOUR day?

From this story: Snow delays, dazzles Londoners – CNN.com

• #1145522

What’s this crap about “whimpy Canadian snow”? There is no such thing as “whimpy Canadian snow”. When it snows in Canada it is anything but “whimpy”. Just ask the Yanks who get the Alberta clipper that comes out of Western Canada (after dumping a foot or more of snow on the West) and dumps many inches (cm) of snow on their midwest. Not “‘whimpy” at all. Anyone who thinks Candian snow is “whimpy” has never experienced a true “Canadian snow”. We get snowstorms that dump anywhere from 1 to 2 feet of snow on parts of our Country (ask the folks in the Maritimes about the last few days – same storm that hit Eastern US). WHIMPY — NOT!! Not only that, but this time of year it is often preceded by freezing rain and then the snow on top of that – try driving under those conditions!!

Bigal, I hope Kentucky gets its power and stuff back soon. I have been watching the news on CNN and you folks in KY have really been hit hard. Best wishes for speedy recovery.

Ron M smile smile smile

• #1145633

Hi Ron
Be aware that the folks in Kentucky and the Western Carolinas face a driving challenge from which we in Canada are mostly free. Snow (not much), then a few vehicles. The snow melts, then it freezes. Next it’s your turn to go down the road (make that hill). Then gravity takes over. Exciting? Certainly. Fun? Not on your life. evilgrin

• #1145956

Yes Don, know what you mean. There is that stuff that originates out of the Gulf of Mexico as rain and turns to freezing rain and snow as it moves north, hitting the eastern states, and then on to southern Ontario/Quebec and the Maritimes. We in the west don’t see that stuff. We get the mixing of warm, moist, Pacific air with cold air from the Arctic and voila…30 cm of snow. We usually get our worst snow, believe it or not in April and May…only upside is that it melts very quickly.

Then there is last year when they got 30 + cm of snow in Victoria, December 20/08 (kid you not). Try driving in the slush that creates – went to visit family and friends and it wasn’t fun at all. They do not know how to deal with that type of weather in Victoria, and they don’t know where to put it when they plow it off the road, so every once in a while they just leave a pile on the road, effectively blocking the right lane – go figure.

Cheers,

RonM

In all my years in Canada and Switzerland I have never heard of this happening!

Must be due to the wrong kind of ice, but ….

• #1145554

Well Big AL, not so good. The main object of my original post was to poke fun at us British in general (especially those of us in Southern England) and the weather forecasters in particular who seem to dramatise everything for the sake of it with “severe weather warnings” for what occurs in general in other countries. laugh However, at first light monday morning it was apparent that they got it right this time. So I had to inwardly offer an apology to them but it seems they were not in a forgiving mood because when the snow had stopped I went out mid morning to do some path clearing with the shovel and broom – about 3 yards – and ouch my back went caput!! So all day yesterday in pain, flat on my back for the most part, feeling pretty sorry for myself and cursing everyone and everything groan . Anyone who has suffered from back problems (it goes with the territory apparently if you’re 6′ tall or more) will know what I mean. Can’t do much today either and will be incapacitated for a few days I know sad My own fault I suppose and I will think twice before criticising our weather forecasters again surrender

• #1145556

Ouch indeed!

I hope your pain will ease soon!

Oh stop being so over dramatic, you sound like a BBC Weather bulletin

– “The worst back pain in 18 years”
– “Movement in around the house has ground to a halt”
– “I blame it on the Council, they had plenty of warning that this could happen” grin

Sorry, couldn’t resist, I hope you get better soon.
