    Hi again !

One more trivial question about Pivot Tables: what is the difference between a calculated field vs a calculated item ?

    Thanks

The Help on calculated fields/items in Excel is really detailed, alex – not sure I could do any better!

Well… I went through the help file again and still don’t quite get it… must be a little thick… Anyway, I am managing to get the result I was looking for, so I’ll defer this to summer readings !

Just so you don’t feel so bad, I don’t get it either. The doc is awful and the big QUE book I’ve got that purports to explain these mysteries is no better. And I’ve been programming for 30 years.

          Alex & Bill,

I attach a file with a very trivial pivot table containing a calculated Item and a calculated Field.

The Pivot table contains a summary of Area (N,S,E,W) with Numbers say sold and amounts for each area. The calculated field calculates the unit cost for each area and the calculated item craetes a new Item (NorthEast) based on 2 existing items.

The example is trivial but may highlight the differences.
