I think we have it fixed now.  We had to go through the hoster.

Okay NOW try it.  (had to put an exception in not only the hoster side but the firewall side)

This should work.  “Users with these roles will be able to upload files regardless of the limits. These users will be able to upload files of any size and any number of files and any file type allowed by the system. ”  MVPs have this right.  Sometimes software is frustrating.  The software allows it (or should) the Firewall should allow it now as well.

      Test as AskWoody MVP.

      Update: still not working.

As I recall, there are actually two different MVP categories, AskWoodyMVP and AskWoody_MVP.

Like @BradLee, I’m in the 1st category and also can’t upload .reg files.

Is it possible only the 2nd category and managers have been authorized to upload them.

There is some setting somewhere that is limiting based on user role.

Trying again showing first the command with spaces so you can see it:
      [ attachment file=”testofupload.reg” ]

      The command when invoked:
      testofupload

Seems to upload, but produces this error message below my signature when logged in:

You lost me.  You can or cannot upload a reg file with _MVP rights?

        • #2559592

          The steps were:

          1. Select file testofupload.reg
          2. Insert into content
            testofupload
          3. The result produces the above and an error message.

I can upload the file and the uploaded file has the correct size when downloaded, but the process isn’t right.

The file size is because it’s so small.

so you can upload but it’s throwing off an error.

      totally does not make sense

I lost the feature of file attachments when posting.

I meant testing of file attachments.  I can do reg files for admins/moderators not yet for normal users.  Still working on that.

Geekdom, you are still confusing me.  You indicate that you can’t upload but then you embed a link.  You can – or cannot – attach a reg file?

I cannot attach a reg file. The file can be placed in the post proper as a link only.

I can upload it and that part is not blocked, although I receive

              1. testofupload.reg: Sorry, you are not allowed to upload this file type.

              instead of the attachment.

Have you defined .reg as a valid file extension in WordPress?

I understand what @geekdom is trying to say and here’s an image of me trying to “attach” a .reg file to help you understand what’s happening.

      PostAttachmentScreen

It I click Submit without choosing one of the options displayed to the right of the .reg file I selected, the .reg file does not show up as an attachment to my post.

However, if I select the Insert into content option, it places a link to the attached .reg file in the post that allows it to be downloaded just like any other attachment (which means the S/W is saving it into the media library)

In both cases, I still see the “Sorry, you are not allowed to upload this file type.” error message after posting my reply.

      Hey Susan,

I have finished the work, and the problem was the ‘.reg’ MIME Type. While everywhere you look, MIME Type says it should be ‘text/plain’, the actual MIME as detected by PHP on your server is different, and it should be: ‘text/x-ms-regedit’.

I have made changes to some changes to WordPress core files to try and capture where the problem with upload was, and after few tries, I found out that upload fails because of the file type and the MIME. The part of the WordPress upload code that checks for MIME is also using a core PHP function to read MIME, and your PHP server has a MIME types list that has a fairly detailed list, and when checked, that function returns real MIME and it is ‘text/x-ms-regedit’.”
Have it working on the test site, doing some final testing, I’ll let you know when it gets loaded up on the main site.

Also a request.  Do NOT upload a reg file downloaded from another location.  Respect the time and effort of the other author at another location especially if there is notes and comments indicating that it came from another site.

Any reg file uploaded should be built by you, the poster.

      Attached .reg file test.

      Update: it works now!

BTW, I see a 10 digit number is being added to the file names (which appears to be an Epoch time stamp) and “assume” that’s to prevent the file name duplication problem being discussed over in the Private: MVP Hangout forum.
