I am unable to access any site, each time receiving the message “Cannot find Server” and a DNS error message. Seems like I may have overwritten some settings or is there some other problem with my Internet Explorer? Has anyone met this problem before? Many thanks.

How are you connecting? (Modem, network, etc.)

ADSL via modem. Not had the problem before.

OK. If it’s anything like our setup, you need the IP address of the ADSL box setup as the default gateway in your network settings.
          Then in IE:
Tools | Internet Options | Connection | LAN settings > select automatically detect settings.

          (Are you in the UK?)

OK, thanks. Yes I’m in the UK. Everying was going fine and then, all of a sudden, I encountered the problem.

Should also have mentioned that the URL reported in address was something like res://c:/windows/system/SHDOCLC.DLL/dnserror.htm

That may be just the default page IE pulls up to display the error message. It’s got to be locally supplied if you are not connecting out.

              OK.

It’s a mystery. I log on, launch IE and it’s business as usual. No problem. Apologies for the apparent non-event! But, I’ll keep an eye on the situation. Thanks for the help Leif.

Could well have been a temporary problem with BT or your ISP. Happens here very occasionally – just like someone threw a switch…
