NONE of my card readers will read my camera’s SD card since I bought a Win8 machine – I have to keep using my Win7 laptop.
I found MANY similar complaints on the web, but no-one so far has offered a solution. Strange to have lost this functionality after about 15 years of no trouble reading memory cards. Is Win 8 busted?

Patch reliability is unclear. Unless you have an immediate, pressing need to install a specific patch, don't do it. |

AskWoody PlusNovember 15, 2013 at 5:29 am #1422958Have you tried to install drivers for the SD Card reader. I found drivers for mine from the PC manufacturer’s site under support, driver and software.
Thanks Medico. My computer is a custom built one with an Asrock Motherboard. There are not even any USB drivers (let alone USB card reader drivers) on their download page. But I’m confused – since when did one have to load drivers for something as basic as a memory card?

AskWoody LoungerNovember 15, 2013 at 5:34 am #1422963If you didn’t have to download card drivers, it’s because Windows could use default drivers and that would work. Every single device on your computer needs a driver. Although it’s logical to blame Windows 8, without a working driver, your card reader won’t work. As annoying as it may be, before upgrading to a new OS, we should check whether the hardware is fully supported and there can always be small things like this, that do not get the most up to date drivers.
Many times, card drivers are included with generic hardware support for a given OS. This usually came as a CD-ROM with an executable that you could run and would add support to all the devices in a given motherboard. I suggest that you contact Asrock support and see if they can direct you to a solution for this problem.

AskWoody_MVPNovember 15, 2013 at 5:37 am #1422965You can try going into Device Manager and deleting (uninstaling) the USB card device then reboot Windows and let Windows search for and load the appropriate drivers or reinstall the default drivers. I know this fixes many problems for me. HTH

AskWoody PlusNovember 16, 2013 at 6:42 am #1423239Thanks everyone for your contributions. Yes I do know about drivers but I had forgotten to install the drivers for my newest card reader (serious senior’s moment :-)).
What had me tricked was that not one of my 3 card readers would work on the new computer.
Results: One old card reader dispatched to bin.
Drivers installed for one reader
The third reader decided to work OK this time around all of its own accord! -
