    Hi,

My computer automatically ran an update on Windows 10 (while I wasn’t looking), but now I cannot open Microsoft Office 2013, it is installed, I have a license and all. I tried the troubleshooting at Microsoft’s webpage and it cannot locate a file called OfficeClicktorun.exe. It also says to try to uninstall and install again, and that doesn’t work either because of this file. When I open any of the apps through the C: directory, it opens a pop-up saying “The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000142)”, and when I try opening an app from the start menu, another popup opens saying “Something went wrong”. What can I do? (other than switching everything to linux) This thing was working properly earlier this afternoon.

Make a backup to an external USB hard disk – just in case.

Revert / uninstall the last update.
Open Windows update and click on update history to see what was recently installed. There should be a link to allow you to uninstall.

Note: if the update was to version 2004 the removal is different – I don’t have details to hand.

      cheers, Paul

This is a known bug in Windows 10 2004.
The known cause is using Avast/AVG anti-virus. There was a fix by Avast

      If you don’t use Avast..

If you have a full image backup before the upgrade, restore from backup.
If not, restore your system to previous version

I tried uninstalling both updates and I’m still having this problem. The updates were not for version 2004, I’m running version 1903. Also, I don’t use Avast/AVG.  In this link, it says you can delete Registry entries. I’ve made a backup of my current Registry thingy, but the link says you can do the following:

      • Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution
      • Delete the keys of affected software

What does it mean to delete the keys of affected software? Is it to go to the “excel.exe” folder (for example) and delete everything that appears there? Or is it something else?

If you are not familiar with the Registry, you should not try to make changes there. You could render your computer unusable.

Are you able to roll back to a previous “restore point”, or 3?

      cheers, Paul

This version (1903) was installed in 2019, so I can’t go back to the previous one. And as for the “restore point”, is it on System Restore?..  I don’t think I can. I’m learning right now that it is a thing.

Start, type “restore”, click “Create a restore point”.
        Select “System Protection” and “Next”.
        Select a restore point.

        cheers, Paul

Have you tried fully shutting down your computer and then rebooting?

At this point, OP, it has become evident that you are not alone…

Do check out Susan’s post for a temporary fix, if you have not done so, already.

Susan seems to think that the problem resides in click to run
