Cannot update InstallShield Engine

Came home from work the other day, turned my antique/dinosaur of a computer on and it rebooted itself a coupla — three times.

When it finally stayed on it could not access the internet and had no sound device present…:(

Error Code: 0x80040155
Interface could not be registered
The COM event classes could not be registered[/INDENT]

Uninstalled any/all new & unused programs (w/Revo Uninstaller Pro) (Suspected that Roxio Creator wuz da culprit…) and generally futzed round with settings, services etc. to no avail.

Finally, used repair option on windows install disk and that fixed the internet problem.

Now, when I try to reinstall the drivers for the sound card (or install anything that uses the InstallShield engine) I receive the following error:o::

[INDENT]Unhandled Exception:
[INDENT]Error # 0x80040706
Description: Object reference not set
Setup will now terminate[/INDENT]
[/INDENT]

Apparently (?) the repair option replaced my “InstallShield engine” w/one that is too old to install any programs (have tried other installations & receive the same error message w/all).

I have tried to delete the old InstallShield engine & install a more recent version (ISScript101.zip, InstallShieldEngineUpdate1000.exe & IkernelUpdate.exe) but receive the same “Unhandled Exception” error message.

Dev Mngr sez device (Sound Card) is working properly yet cntrl pnl sez no audio device present:confused:.

In addition I noticed that when I try to open Secunia PSI I receive yet anther error message:

[INDENT]Runtime error!
[INDENT]This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.
[/INDENT][/INDENT]

Ordinarily I would just reinstall Secunia but in light of current problem(s) am hesitant to do so.

I really, really, really don’t want to reformat/reinstall windows so any help, advice, hints etc. will be greatly appreciated

Thanx for the (incredibly) quick response.

I tried the link you posted, (the version of the installer for my sound card is 10.0.0.159) so I tried to install “InstallShieldEngineUpdate1000.exe” and got the same “object reference not set” error message. I then tried “IkernelUpdate.exe” from the same site and received the same error code.

Check out these two possible solutions at Tecarena’s site.

Also, some have successfully installed the InstallShieldEngineUpdate1000.exe by running it in Windows 98/ Windows ME compatibility mode. You can see that discussion here.

Doing a search on ‘Error# 0x80040706’ will yield more hits as well.

One of the 1st things I did was to “Google” the error code but I was drowning in search results, not to mention that everything I tried failed to work, so I turned to my most trusted source of info — Windows Secrets.

Couldn’t resist quoting this post (w/some minor editing to reflect my problem) from another forum, as it describes the problem better than I originally did:

Other versions seem to be functioning at least in terms of uninstalling,[/SIZE][/COLOR] …however ANY program that attempts to use the… [COLOR=”silver”][SIZE=”1″]problem version of[/SIZE][/COLOR] …InstallShield runs into the same error. This includes the download fix outlined on the Installshield web site. [emphasis added] How is that for irony – InstallShield’s solution to solving the problem only works if there is no problem – hello?? …[COLOR=”silver”][SIZE=”1″]So this is not an i-tunes problem as is also evidenced by [/SIZE][/COLOR] …a fair number of other people posting this error in connectrion with a wide range of software. I am not a computer expert — my main troubleshooting process is to keep beating my head against the brick wall until something gives; i.e. trying any and all solutions with minor variations over and over until prob is resolved. Surprisingly this has almost always worked, altho it is very time consuming. When beating head against brick wall doesn’t work I turn to my last resort: reformatting the HDD & reinstalling the OS ( which I absolutely abhor).

Guess I need to purchase a larger HDD and a DVD burner IOT create and save a backup image of my HDD when my system is operating as desired.

My next step will probably be to install a WIN98SE-era PCI sound card that I have laying around…

p.s. BTW, the device that I’m tryin to install is not a “sound card” per se — it is a chip (chipset?) onboard the desktop board (Intel D865GBF). — RRR
