While working, I did a ctrl-s to save my work (which I have happily taught myself to do VERY frequently).

Word gives me an error: “Word cannot give a document the same name as an open document. Type a different name for the document you want to save…”

Problem is that I just wanted to do a save, not a save as. The open version of the document with the offending name was the document that I was trying to save.

    What gives?

    Thanks,
    Saturn

Although it is for Word 97 instead of Word 2000, does the situation described in WD97: Error Message: “Word Cannot Give a Document the Same Name” apply to you?

        Thanks Hans.

In fact Background Saves and Save Auto-recovery info were both checked.
        They have been disabled.

And I have now deleted the 16 or so copies of the document that I incrementally saved in the interim as well brickwall.

You might want to turn Auto-Recovery back on. You probably save more often than the usual interval for AutoRecovery saves (e.g., 5 minutes), but it’s useful for the case when your phone rings and you don’t press Ctrl+S before answering.

(For Office XP users, it’s annoying the way Word can spend 5 minutes trying to recover files after a crash, but for Office 2000 users, I think it’s a very useful feature.)

      Hi Saturn:
There’s another thing you should check, also. You may have temp files lying around that are interferring with the save process, especially if Word has crashed in the past. Take a look at the first step listed in post 197827.
      Cheers,
