Several weeks ago I configured Chrome to use the Google Smart Lock for Passwords. IIRC I did this with one click in a checkbox in . With Settings open, I went to the bottom of the page that opened, then clicked on “Show advanced settings”. In the “Passwords and forms” section I checked the checkbox by “Offer to save passwords with Google Smart Lock for Passwords”. Now the first time I login manually to a site (typing in my email/username and password) a popup asks me if I want Smart Lock to save my login info. I click yes and the next time I go to that site I find my login info filled in for me.

Well, Friday evening I tried, with a long distance phone call, to help a friend set up his Chrome to use Smart Lock. And failed. I’m hoping for some advice here about why I failed.

    Some facts:

    1. When he got to that checkbox, The words to the right of the checkbox were something like a brief “Offer to save passwords”, not my “Offer to save passwords with Google Smart Lock for Passwords”. Strange, no? I had him check the box anyway.

    2. I had him look up his version of Chrome. It was the same as mine, 56.0.2924.87, followed below by “Google Chrome is up to date”.

    3. We both have PC’s with Win 7.

    4. When he logged into his Gmail his usual way (manually), his Gmail opened, but there was no popup asking him if he wanted Smart Lock to save his login info. In the same way, he got the same failure with another favorite site of his.

    So: any advice?
