Hi Loungers. Hope some of you find this useful.

When Google launched Chrome v32 last week they changed the scrollbars to a Windows 8 look. In the process they introduced a serious bug. I spent some time researching a few hundred blog and forum posts and came up with a clean, simple fix, so for the benefit of anyone else here it is.

    The problem:

In a plain HTML web page using Chrome v32 you can’t click on or drag the scrollbars on drop-down lists (or even in places on scrolling page elements).

    Simple workaround:

Use the scrollwheel on your mouse if you have one, or quickly type the first few letters of the desired entry if you don’t (or use a combination, letters then scrollwheel)

    Simple fix:

If you launch Chrome from a simple shortcut (desktop or menu), right click the icon and click Properties on the context menu. If you have Chrome on the taskbar, right click the icon then right click the Chrome item 2nd from the bottom of the menu (3rd if not pinned) and click Properties on that menu. Select the Compatibility tab and tick “Disable visual themes”. Click OK and restart Chrome. You’ll see some changed visual effects but the scrollbar will work again.

Various posters suggest other fixes, some of which didn’t work for me (or the users I support), some of which are very aggressive (disable visual themes for the whole of Windows – welcome to Windows 2000!). This simple fix worked for everyone using Windows 7 and 8.

Rumour is that v33, now in beta, no longer has the problem so when you get upgraded uncheck that box.

    Ian.

Either I don’t have the issue or I can’t see it…do you or can you take some screen shots of before and after to show me as well as others who might be having this issue. Thanks.

It affects specifically Chrome version 32.0.1700.76 m (as displayed if you click the Chrome menu button on the right and then About Chrome). It also apparently only affects HTML scrollbars such as those in tags and

s with the overflow scroll style. Gadgets created using Javascript etc. still work.

You can see the fuss on Google product forums: http://productforums.google.com/forum/#!forum/chrome and search for scroll bar.

The attached scroll.htm (in the zip, the forum won’t allow htm) illustrates the problem, if affected the drop-down list can’t be scrolled and you also can’t highlight the bottom row with the mouse (but you can select it).
