Is anyone else experiencing a noticeable slowdown in speed after latest update to version 91.0.4472.147?  Mine updated this morning and it sure is a big change from how quickly it normally runs!  Husbands Chromebook updated 2 days ago and he commented on how slow his is running as well.

Haven’t noticed a difference. Don’t run it much though. I’ll let you know if I see any slowdown in the next couple days. It’s never been a speed demon, our connection is at the slow end, hard to say if it would be that or the latest update causing the lag.

Chromebook is still running the same for me with the latest update 91.0.4472.147, no difference than last update. Hope you got it figured out. Indexing can take up time before the OS settles into place. The timeframe varies.

Thanks for your responses Myst!  I’m still experiencing the slowness.  From Googling this online, I’m beginning to wonder if it is an HP Chromebook issue.  I’m finding others with HP products that seem to be the ones complaining about this.  Problem seems to be CPU maxing out constantly – which makes for slow going.

But it doesn’t hit all units with this bug. However it seems like the majority of Chromebooks are having issues with this new update. I’ll keep a watch on my Acer. So far, as I said before, no problems with an unusual slowdown here.

I recall a function called powerwash (?) that seemed to repair malfunctioning Chromebooks in their earlier days. Is this repair still available to you?

Please research before jumping in. Check that your apps will reinstall, or can be done manually. Verify your files are in Chrome’s cloud, and will be untouched by the powerwash. Know what the result should be, so there are no surprises.

When you know what to expect, you can decide if this repair is right for you.

Looking elsewhere in this forum, I found @joelbon mention Powerwash as recent as late last December, here. It seems to be a regularly useful tool for joelbon. No indication if it was helpful to that Orig Poster.

B – Thank you for the link.  I wonder if I can easily roll back to the “safe” version which is now 91.0.4472.114?  Apparently the powerwash that other posters have mentioned doesn’t seem to help the problem and actually, users are being warned against trying it.  Does anyone know if you can roll back to the previous version without causing new problems?

In the meantime, there are a couple of options to regain your Chromebook’s CPU power while developers get this bug squashed.

First, you can revert to a previous version of Chrome OS. This method is relatively simple but it will require power washing your device. If you go this route, make sure to back up all of your files to the cloud or a flash drive before you wipe your machine. Here’s a quick video that will walk you through the process. [Available at link below.]

Alternatively, you can always move your Chromebook to the Beta channel. This will get you to the next version of Chrome OS while we wait for a fix to the CPU issue. Moving to Beta is simple and won’t wipe your device. That said, it will require a power wash to move back to the Stable channel. Keep that in mind before you make the move because you’ll want to ensure you have everything backed up. To move to Beta, head to your Chrome OS settings menu and click on the About Chrome OS tab in the left-hand navigation menu. Click “Additional details” and then click the “change channel” button. Select the Beta channel and wait for the update to complete. When ready, you’ll be prompted to restart your Chromebook and you will then be in the Beta channel and hopefully, bug-free.

We will update this post when a fix for the CPU usage issue begins rolling out to users.
