When I click on the Start button, the Search window opens which overlays the Start Menu icons. I cannot get the search window to close so I can see all of my start menu icons. This started with the last automatic update of Windows 10 about a week and a half ago.

I’ve attached a screen shot of what I am seeing. Any help would be greatly appreciated. This happens even if I have the Search button hidden.

      Which version of Win10? v2004?

    • #2296316

Sorry, I should have included that info with my initial post…

      Edition: Win 10 Pro

      Version: 2004

      Installed on 8/26/2020

      OS Build: 19041.508

This was an unintentional installation. I had Windows Update set to pause updates but I forgot the delay date had passed and Win10 updated by itself overnight. I didn’t catch it until several days later when I noticed this issue with the Start menu. My bad…

Probably caused by a previous “ImmersiveSearch” registry tweak for a floating search box (which no longer cooperates on Version 2004):

After some troubleshooting, it was found that everything in Start Menu was being overridden by Search box result window.

So if you are also facing broken Start Menu issue in latest Windows 10 version 2004 and the search box UI is covering Start Menu area, just remove ImmersiveSearch DWORD from following key in Registry Editor:

      HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Search

BINGO! I simply changed the ImmersiveSearch REG_DWORD to 0 and immediately, it worked as it should.

Thanks for the quick reply and resolution to my issue! AskWoody’s experts saved the day yet again.

Thank you as well!  I could not remember that I did this tweak long ago, and after update I could no longer see start menu items.  Changed dword to 0 and all is right as rain again!!
