Combining two files with track changes

Is it possible to combine two files where track changes were done in each file? I think this is not possible, but I want to check. Here is the problem:

I have a file that was edited by someone in track changes. This same person later accepted those changes and made additional changes in track change mode. My boss now wants me to combine these two files so all of the track changes are in one document. I have access to Word 2003 and Word 2007. I know 2007 has a feature that is supposed to be able to combine two files. However, since the track changes were accepted in the second version, its no longer the same file as the first version, so presumably that wouldn’t work. I can say that I tried it, and it definitely didn’t do what I was hoping it would do.

Is there any way to do what my boss wants?

I just tried this in Word 2007 and it was very easy.

On the review tab, go to the compare section, click the arrow by Compare and select Combine.

In the dialog box that appears, select the two documents (use the Browse… option from the drop down list to find them) and click OK.

Were you using two identical files with different track changes?

Because what I have is one file where the changes were accepted, and then more changes added to that file (which they want merged).

When I tried doing what you suggest, it showed just about everything as a change.

[*]I mad a couple of changes
[*]I saved the file and closed it
[*]I changed my Username (in Word options)
[*]I opened the file again
[*]I accepted all changes
[*]I made some more tracked changes
[*]I saved the file with a new name
[*]I closed the file and set my username back to it’s normal value
[*]I opened Word and used the combine feature to combine all changes from both files into a new file
