• Complex scripts in styles (2003/SP1)

Templates we use all the time were created in 2K — now in 2003, a lot of the styles have Complex Script fonts included in the style definition — where do they come from? I’ve included a bare bones document that shows some of the styles that have this “new” feature. Just makes everything more cumbersome. Help says Complex script has to do with VBE or Web pages, or right-to-left languages — none of which seems to apply.

How do I stop 2003 from doing this? Thanks for any/all help.

See if you can get rid of it as follows:
      – In Windows,select Start | Control Panel.
      – Open Date, Time, Language and Regional Options.
      – Open Regional and Language Options.
      – Activate the Languages tab.
      – Clear the check boxes “Complex Script” and “East Asian Languages”.
      – Click OK.

Thanks for the suggestion — I just thought it was our new Office 2003. My Regional Options is a little different; we still use Windows 2000. My locale is set at English (U.S.) and the language setting is U.S. and Western Europe. If I log on another computer and use the same template, I don’t get any mention of complex scripts in my styles. Others in my dept. also don’t.

I even have a Complex Scripts tab on my options menu! I will get my System Administrator to look for the reason why.

You could check if you have support for some Asian language installed, in “Windows Start > Programs > Microsoft Office > Microsoft Office Tools > Microsoft Office Language Settings”.

Unfortunately, I don’t know how to get rid of all the weird stuff in the style definitions. It will still be in the documents, I think, even though you might not see it any more.
And sometimes if you use some special characters, Word will suddenly decide to apply the Asian, BiDi or “Other”(?) font to them.

Somone from our Help Desk went thru a “Detect & Repair” and that straightened me out. Thanks all.
