    Hi All,

    When my XP computer is on sleep, which is done by hitting the Sleep button on a Microsoft wireless keyboard, my computer starts up for a couple of minutes or so every hour. There is nothing in the Scheduled Tasks folder, that’s been checked over many times! Event Viewer, under System, shows Service Control Manager as the source, at all the right times. The only pertinent information I can see is under Properties for each event, which says The Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) service entered the running state. I have no idea what that’s all about! Nor why it needs to run.

    Although it now goes back to sleep very shortly after waking up, for a while it was coming on, and staying on. However, I think that may have been something in the Scheduled Tasks folder.

    Does anyone have any ideas how I can get the computer to behave itself, and not turn on and off all the time? Many thanks, Keith.

      One thing worth trying is to disable the network card’s ability to to wake the PC.

      Head over to device manager and untick all of the options under power management for the device.

        Thank you Browni. Unfortunately Allow to bring out of Standby is already unticked. However, Allow to turn off to save power is ticked, so I shall untick that too. Cheers.

        It was on Sleep for a couple of hours earlier today, and didn’t misbehave, so maybe your solution has fixed it, many thanks Browni. Won’t know for sure for another 24 Hours. Cheers 🙂

    • #1501812

      It’s worthwhile trying as I have seen a number of reports that all 3 boxes need to be unticked.

      The only reason they are ticked in my screenshot is my current build of Windows 10 is less than 24 hours old and I haven’t got round to it yet! Then again, it did go to sleep. Hmm…

      Also, wake on lan —
      in UEFI or BIOS;
      and/or also within Manage Wireless Adaptor;
      and/or whatever thingie governs the hardwire portion;
      — needs to be disabled as well.

            Ellipses are sometimes used as indicators of spam in forum software/plugins, I usually precede them with a space to prevent this … even here in the Lounge, where they’re safe 😀

            I note your use of the word “usually” followed by a definitive exclamation mark…

      I believe Lastwake is in XP, but I think you have to enter it on the command line as:
      powercfg -lastwake or maybe do powercfg /? to see format and switches available…slightly different from below link instructions.

      So find out what is waking it up:

      Hi again Browni. Didn’t work. It’s coming on and staying on again. Lol So I’m going to have another look in the Scheduled Tasks folder, see if anything has changed. Nope, doesn’t appear to be .

    • #1501993

      Lol. I reckon!

      If you have freight trains running nearby, try turning your mouse upside down:

      Well, as I’m in the lower part of the Southern Hemisphere, it’s already upside down!! Lol. No nearby trains, only big trucks!

      • #1502170

        No nearby trains, only big trucks!

        Big enough to vibrate the mouse surface?

        Did you try the lastwake command as in the first link in post #6 or disabling the mouse from waking the computer as in the second link in post #6?

        • #1502614

          Mind you, I just realised, while I was away, it was powered off, not asleep. But the 10 hours last night, it was asleep.

    • #1502161

      I’m using AVG Free, and it runs automatically whenever new updates are available. It also says Run when computer starts up if task has been missed. So presumably it doesn’t wake it up to run, otherwise it would be pointless having that checked.

    • #1502613

      Well, I’m not quite sure what’s changed, but all is good. At the moment anyway. I’ve been away a couple of days, and no problem, came home last night and used computer, then put it to sleep. This morning, it hadn’t woken up.
      BruceR, no there’s not enough vibration from trucks, and I didn’t yet get to try the lastwake, and the mouse didn’t appear to have a problem. The article was talking about Vista and Bluetooth, neither of which I have, so didn’t go into that any further, at that stage. This has happened before, and I didn’t really get to the bottom of it then, either, so I guess it could happen again. I’ll just have to wait and sere. Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions.

      Like, forever, there are two things that I disable on every new OS install…..one is sleep and the other is Hibernate.
      Both have been buggy since their arrival many years back.

      My computer(s) have only two states….. ON and OFF! Nothing is any more simple and safe than that.

      Cheers Mates!

    • #1502664

      My PC is hibernated when I finish – I never turn it off and only re-boot for updates. Never missed a beat and it’s really quick to fire up (15 seconds).

      cheers, Paul

    • #1502671

      I use sleep by default and totally understand the OP’s frustration.

      I don’t know the answer from my end as it now works as intended in that I can fire a “magic packet” to the PC and it will wake up, otherwise it won’t.

    • #1502699

      Another 24 hours, and all is still good. The only reason I use Sleep is because it’s so quick to both turn off, and turn on, just a few seconds. To restart from scratch takes some minutes. Thanks to everyone 🙂

        You are, of course, entirely correct regarding the plural form – thingies. I shoulda realised you simply missed typing the S on the end of the wor . 😎

      I just reNoticed OP mentioned Windows Image Acquisition (WIA); could this be a major onboard video failure? I’m not sure whether hardware or software or both.

        Unlikely, that’s to do with grabbing screenshots, loading from scanners and the like.

        Hmm, does the machine have a webcam?

    • #1503728

      I have a webcam, but I never use it! It has a light that shows when it’s on, reasonably bright, but I’ve not seen any signs of it being on.

    • #1503782

      Theory: Remote Access Trojan (RAT) opens the webcam to take a picture (possibly other things like screenshots as well) at a predetermined, or on access/manual, time. This triggers the notebook being woken from Sleep and any processes needed, in this instance WIA -related, are started.

      Alt.: There’s an unrelated wireless trigger from some other device within range that’s being mistaken for a ‘wake up call’ from your wireless keyboard?

      Aside from running scans to detect and remove any RAT/Boot or Root kit or working with a Malware specialist forum, there are other steps you might be able to take to prevent unauthorised waking from Sleep. Disabling USB/Wireless devices from waking the PC (Power CPL and individual Device Manager properties for such devices) and using a momentary press on the SleepShutdown button on the notebook to trigger the wake. A Band Aid/sticky note over the webcam.

      It’s been okay for about ten days or so now. I’m not quite sure what I did to fix it, or if it fixed itself, but all is good at this stage. Thanks for your help everybody. Now I’ll have to start a new thread soon, for my son’s XP computer rebooting itself.
