I have a table in Word which is in the format that I require.

What I want to do is to copy the data from an Excel table to the word table (and have it create any extra rows that it needs to fit, but to retain the word formatting and table size.

Going from Word to Excel I could just do Paste Special->Values.

Any ideas how to achieve it the other way round?

    TIA
    Regards
    Paul

If you have different formatting for different rows, you’d have to copy and paste cell by cell. Otherwise, try this:
      – Create a one-row table with the desired formatting in Word.
      – Copy the table in Excel.
      – Position the insertion point immediately below the table in Word.
      – Paste.
      – Delete the now superfluous first row.

I had already tried that (well it was actually a 5 row table that I pasted below). The table and cell widths seemed to be correct, but the formatting was still as it had come from Excel (not too much of a problem), but the real problem with that method was that the table columns were offset from the original ones and I can’t sem to line ’em up again.

Attached is a picture of what I ended up with.

Strange. Below is a picture of what I get.
As you can see, the pasted data take on the formatting from the existing Word table.
I’m using Office XP SP-3 too.

I like to create an exactly sufficient number of blank rows in the already formatted table, select those cells, and paste the incoming data without formatting. Word should lay the cell data in exactly the right places. If you try this, note that any mismatch in the source and destination row/column count and shape will lead to problems… (e.g., Word can’t pivot when doing this kind of paste).
