creating asp pages without web server (Office XP on Windows XP Home Edition)

At the risk of sounding extraordinarily ignorant: Is it possible to run ASP pages on my computer if I do not have any Web server software installed. I am running Windows XP Home Edition, and Office XP. I thought that there may be a way to do this using FrontPage 2002. If anyone knows anything about this, I’d love to hear it. (If I can’t do this, does anyone know where I can get free Web Server software from?)

Taibe ~ I tried to find a way to do this, and failed after what I thought was significant effort.

What I wound up with is Developer version of Office, which contains IIS for a local machine. (Never got THAT to work either).

No, the Web Server process the ASP file as it fills the users request for the page.
Apache is a free web server, however I don’t know if it will run ASP.

Perhaps some of the other loungers might know.

I didn’t realize until I read your message that IIS (Internet Information Server) is included in Windows XP Professional but not in Windows XP Home. Bummer.

I checked Download.com for free web servers, and this one is popular: Abyss Web Server. The name is unusual.

Their site says to use ActiveHTML from seliSoft to add ASP support to their web server. ActiveHTML also supports several other web servers. The program claims compatibility with ASP 3.0, which I believe is the version that shipped with Windows 2000.

I have no idea whether these are good products, but clearly other people share your need and the community has responded. I would guess that FrontPage Server Extensions would be a problem in a non-Microsoft-server environment, but I could be wrong about that. Good luck in your quest.

Thanks all for your input, help, and support. Unfortunately, my Dell computer shipped with Windows XP home, not pro, thus, the problem. I’ll have a look at the web server(s) you suggest. I don’t necessarily need to use frontpage to create my asps. I actually loaded frontpage onto my computer under the mistaken notion that I could run asps locally from frontpage.

I would be interested in the details if you get Abyss and AHTML to work as I’d like to try it at home too. I’ve downloaded / installed them both and they seem to be working but still can’t get Visual Studio to use them. I’m using a VB.Net book and working my way through the database sections. They launched into a really interesting section on writing ASP apps but I can’t get past the New Project box!
