    Using Win7:
I don’t know what happened, and I’ve seen this from some 2010 posts on the Internet. After upgrading Thunderbird, my windows desktop screen went black, I can reboot and get a different screen, but working with the slide-show, it goes black again and won’t show the slide show. When I turn off the machine, as it’s shutting down I can see one of the photos of the slide-show, but on reboot the slide show still doesn’t come on even with the new background color showing.
I’ve tried turning on and off the transparency switch, which makes no difference…which is the hardest thing to find; what were they thinking?
It’s really not worth the time I’ve already spent trying to fix this, but if someone has a quick answer, I’d be interested.
About the same time as this happened I started getting garbage from my printers; HP 1020; Samsung 300 and 310 when trying to print emails using the new Thunderbird 5.
I don’t know if any of this was really caused with Thunderbird 5 or Firefox update, or all the plethora of Windows updates; either way it seems it needs a fix…and it has happened to others in the past without warning.

Any chance you have a recent Image to restore from. If so, do so, then install the updates one at a time to see if the problem returns. This might help isolate which is causing the problem. Perhaps System restore might help, but my experience with system restore has been less than steller.

See Joe’s answer in this thread:

By the way, I’m getting tired of reading the responses that trash System Restore. I have had good luck using it on both my pc and the many PCs I support. Is it perfect – no. It does fail to work in rare occasions, so I wouldn’t use it as my only backup strategy, especially since it does not back up user data. But it does work in the vast majority of cases and is a good additional tool to have in your system recovery arsenal.

Sorry Jerry, but I do not believe my response trashed System Restore. I simply stated my experience with System Restore has been less than steller. I do not consider this a trashing, simply related what my experience has been.
