I think thus may be a youtube question more than a Firefox question but I just noticed it after upgrading to Firefox 104 on my PC.

I am going to youtube and am not logged into any Google products. Most of the videos I play on youtube start with subtitles enabled. I can of course go to the menu and disable them. I would suspect that if I logged into youtube I could probably set a preference that would stick, but I dont want to log into (stay logged into) any google stuff.

Is there a way to start videos without being logged in with subtitles OFF?

Have you considered using the ‘C’ key to toggle subtitles on and off?

      Hope this helps…

Thanks. That’s a great tip. Would love to get a more permanent answer, but that is certainly good to know and easier then doing it through the menu.

Actually it’s CC (Closed Captions) not Subtitles and YouTube started enabling them by default a few months ago.

I’ve looked and it doesn’t seem like anyone has created a browser add-on/extension to do this automatically so,unless you log in to your YouTube account and have your preferences set to disable them, you now have to “manually” disable them for each video.

I actually signed in and under my account settings chose to disable Closed Captions by default. Then signed out. When I played the same video (that previously has CC)  there was no CC. So hoping that the cookie sticks on this setting…

      Thanks

I just watched a Youtube video and didn’t see closed captions. What did irritate me was that I was forbidden from seeing the video full screen from the website that was showing it. To see it full screen I had to go to Youtube. I haven’t had that happen before but I don’t often watch videos so maybe this has been around for some time? I did not login to Youtube.

Does seeing the captions by default now have to do with the browser in use? I was using my default browser Fx 91.13.0 ESR. This version of Fx is reaching End of Life today and should be auto updated on Sept 20 to a new path and version of Fx ESR. I sure hope I don’t get closed captions in the new version! I’d have to go hunt for my Youtube password (to login and disable there)…I can’t recall the last time I logged into Youtube…years ago I assume as I avoid anything to do with Google as much as I can.

Not all YouTube videos include CC, it’s only the ones that do where they’re now enabled by default.

Also, as @jackpollack (JP) indicated, if you’ve ever logged in and disabled CC in your YouTube preferences, the cookie it stores in your browser “should” remember that for all future videos (at least until it either expires or you delete it.)

What did irritate me was that I was forbidden from seeing the video full screen from the website that was showing it. To see it full screen I had to go to Youtube.

The ability to watch an “embedded” video full screen is controlled by the code used to embed it on a site, not the “source” location of the actual video. If a site chooses not to include the code for the “full screen” option, it won’t be available when viewing it from that site.
