Can someone give me a good simple definition of what an array formula really is and why you would use one? I’ve used a couple formulas that had the curly brackets because I was told I needed them, but I’m not quite sure why the curly brackets are needed? How is a formula different if it doesn’t have them?

Thanks in advance for the help.

I can’t easily answer you. But whilst waiting for a better answer, you might care to do a search on the username BobUmlas and read a few of his utterings within the lounge. Alternatively, pay a quick trip to chip and see if his page helps your understanding.

Here is Bob Umlas’ White Paper. Bob explains by example and he’s a master. But I’ll be a fool and try for a brief explanation: array formulas permit you to perform metacalculations on groups of related data.
