I have a user who has a spreadsheet, consisting of about 4500 rows. This spreadsheet has some minor calculations, and no macros. It’s not complicated. For some reason, deleting rows or columns causes Excel to return the error “Excel has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. An error log is being created.” And it crashes. Adding rows/columns does not cause this. No other spreadsheet has this problem. It happens both in 97 and in Office XP. I have saved the file with a new name in a differnt location. Same problem. I have copied all the data to a new spreadsheet and saved it. Same problem. I don’t know what could be causing this. I can hide rows or columns and it doesn’t crash. But, delete even one tiny row.. anywhere in the spreadsheet – top, middle, end – and Excel crashes. Any ideas?

It sounds to me like the workbook is corrupted. Here is one thing that you can try if you have Excel 2000 or XP available. Open the workbook in Excel 2000 or XP and then do a File SaveAs and change the file type to HTML. Close Excel, and then start Excel again and open the HTLM version of the file and do a SaveAs back into .xls for format. Now see if you can delete rows from that file.
