With regard to driver problems, there is one other solution which I encountered recently. After an onboard sound “card” did not function and attempting to update drivers, I replaced it with a new sound board. That worked for a while. Then a usb port failed. Then I noticed hot spots on the motherboard and replaced 2 hot and swelled capacitors on the board. That fixed all. Bottom line, some times the hardware really does fail.
