    We have just upgraded to Windows Server 2008 64bit, Exchange Server 2008 and Active Directory. In additional to all of the regular growing pains associated with upgrading to a new server, we are have major problems around automatic updating and the server restarting. As an immediate solution to this problem we had disabled automatic updating, however, this weekend an update for remote administrative tools downloaded, installed and restarted the server. When the server restarted the hub transport service in exchange server did not start automatically and we lost email. We are unable to find out why it updated and how we can turn this off to prevent it from happening in the future.

      Have you checked the event logs?

      Is there a Group Policy setting that would modify the AU settings?

      I have configured the system shutdown option GPO to disabled.

      I can’t imagine why Remote (Server) Administration Tools will have installed itself on WS2008! It is supposed to be for Windows 7 or Vista SP1 workstations, from whence to administer the server remotely…
      Or have I got the wrong product?

      You certainly want to ensure that you have set Updates not to reboot automatically. See if this helps…
      You aren’t using WSUS, are you? My problem is that it won’t update all my workstations!

      I am a fan of auto patch and re-boot, which I generally schedule for 5am – after the backups and not down too long if I need to fix it when I get in in the morning. I also use WSUS – it ain’t perfect but it does work most of the time.

      Why did you lose mail because of a service failure? Mail servers retry delivery.
      Was it down for several days? If so you need to monitor Exchange for problems – should do it anyway.

      I am a fan of auto patch and re-boot, which I generally schedule for 5am – after the backups and not down too long if I need to fix it when I get in in the morning. I also use WSUS – it ain’t perfect but it does work most of the time.

      Was it down for several days? If so you need to monitor Exchange for problems – should do it anyway.
