    Win95, Explorer and possibly Office97 (SR2-a).

One of my users machines has lost all drag and drop functionality in Windows95 Explorer. Can’t move, copy files etc etc. Problem also replicates in Word97, where the user can’t move a selection to another part of the document.

After extensive search, no solutions found in MSKB.

Has anyone come across this before, and if so, do you have a solution?

    Cheers,

    Ade

Is there a problem with the user’s mouse? Have you tried re-installing the mouse driver?

If i’m remembering correctly, Win95 doesn’t have the option to ‘repair’ an installation, so you may have to reload the OS if the problem persists, but I would try re-loading the mouse drivers first..

      Hope that helps!

No joy with re-installation of the mouse drivers – not sure I want to re-install the O/S just yet; but I’ll bear it in mind.

        Thanks,

Can you still select with the mouse?

Re-install of mouse and mouse drivers hasn’t solved the problem. So, a fuller description of the problem…

My user can still select words in Word, and when attempting to drag and drop the selection, the status bar shows the “move selection to another location blah blah” text; but it doesn’t.

In Explorer, there is no drag and drop functionality at all; EXCEPT immediately after starting the machine, when you can D&D files, but you can’t use Ctrl, Shift to carry out copy functions etc. If you start Word and then go back to Explorer, all D&D functionality is lost.

        This isn’t good is it?

I’m beginning to think, because of the above, that its Office97 that’s causing the problem?? Its a standard install, with service pack SR2, but it is installed to the second hard disk of the machine – but I don’t think that is the problem?

Any ideas? I’m moving towards an Office97 re-install and if that doesn’t work, the O/S??

        Regards,

        Ade

it almost sounds like the machine may be infected.

Running O97SR2 on W95 machine hasn’t caused any problems for me, and running it on a second hard disk is more of a good idea than it is a problem.

Do you have AV software installed?

You might download filemon, and load it at startup to see what program runs to disable your drag/drop ability.

Another thing.. it may just be slow, have you given it a good 30 seconds to respond? Check your resources, (right click my computer, click on properties, and select performance tab) and see if they’re obscenely over-used…

          hope that helps!

            Thanks for getting back…

Am using McAfee VirusScan, with daily DAT file updates – so any viruses should be picked up; but I’ll run a full scan to make sure.

            I’ll use Msinfo32 to see what’s loading at start-up, but I think I’m going to do an O/S re-install.

            I’ll keep you posted.

            Thanks for your help.

            Solved it!

No viruses detected and no mystery programs to cause conflict at start up. Re-installing Office97 didn’t solve it either.

Soft (repair) re-install of Win95 has solved the problem though.

            Thanks for all your pointers.
