A newbie friend using a brand new Win7 OS was naively attempting to ‘copy and paste’ a DVD to their hard drive.
After some considerable time they terminated the long unfinished process.

As a result the DVD reader/burner no longer recognises any type of inserted disc.

Opening device manager showed the DVD drive with a warning icon and a “not working properly” message.

Taking steps to uninstall and reinstall the drive through the ‘Device Manager’ with appropriate in between reboots shows the warning icon is gone and “This device is working properly” message.

When any sort of disc is inserted in the drive, it spins up as if reading and then rests as is usual, but then clicking on the device in ‘My Computer’ to play or show the disc contents causes tray ejection and a popup asking for a disc to be inserted in the drive.

Disconnection and reconnection of the device cables with reboots to initiate successful recognition and installation of “new device found” makes no difference.

How can I reset the DVD drive to see and read an inserted disc?

Any assistance will be much appreciated.

    Many thanks,
    TerryS.

I had a similar situation, very recently, which was solved by updating the UDF driver. The bother is that you have to apply for the fix to be sent to you. Have a look here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/975617

A simple Repair Installation of Win 7 might replace the corrupted files.

A simple Repair Installation of Win 7 might replace the corrupted files.

After weeks of getting the OS personalised and functional up untill the afore mentioned glitch, there was some reluctance to do a part or full install untill all other avenues were exhausted.
So…exhausred we are and your suggestion looks like it is it.

        Thanks,
        TerryS.

A repair install does not destroy whats already there, it fixes corrupted system files only. You might need to re-apply some updates, but otherwise your customizations, and apps, etc should remain intact.

Sorry this is so late but I’ve been out of town some time.

I finally sorted the frustrating problem in less than ten minutes with a new drive unit.

Thanks to all the reply posters, your tips and advice have improved my own knowledge base for problem solving next time.

        Regards,
        TerryS.

Seems Terentius solved it by getting a new drive:

Before you buy a new drive unit, do try the Microsoft “fixit” mentioned above. Last weekend, I was helping a friend to set up her new Win7 system. Initially, the DVD drive worked (we made the back-up discs). Later, after installing 77 Windows Update files, the DVD drive had disappeared. Panic! Finally, I came across the Microsoft “fixit” — which did what it claimed.
