Email Program For Windows 7

Hi guys,

Now that I have Windows 7 setup on a dual boot I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for a good email program because Windows 7 doesn’t suppoort Outlook Express any longer.

I have tried Thunderbird and kinda like it but would like to kow what others have used besides Thunderbird.

The current successor seems to be windows live mail. It has a similar flavor to express

Just be sure to back it up

I believe that ThunderBird is the closest you will get to Outlook Express and have been using T-Bird for several years as it has steadily improved. As Ken J indicates, Windows Live is also a good alternative – a number of my friends who upgraded to Windows 7 adjusted to it without a problem. Have you thought about a web-mail program like G-Mail? Personally, I use both T-Bird and GMail which is kind of having the best of both worlds.

I’m not to fond of Live Mail.

I do use Gmail for some things but I don’t care for having all my mail on a web server and be at their mercy if something goes wrong.

Like you say Rich, Thunderbird is good and I have used it before.
I’ll probably end up with that in the end.

Incredimail is pretty good too but it too glitzy for me.

Well I do use Windowss Live Mail. I find it very similar to OE. Plus it allows me to set up all my email accounts to check them at the same time. I can choosee which mail to use to send a new mail once I type it. It was able to import all my contacts. It just suits me. I was not impressed with Thunderbird, sorry to those Thunderbird backers out there.

is worth a try. Looks and feels like Outlook Express and/or Eudora.
Free version is limited to two accounts but that may not be a problem for you.
I have been using it for two or three months and it seems solid.

My wife uses Thunderbird and likes it a lot. I have a license for Office 2010 Pro so I use Outlook (I have to use Outlook at work so having a single email client helps preserve my sanity).

Well Pete, I installed Thunderbird and I guess it’s about the best of the others that are out there.

I believe that Outlook Express is the email program found in Office.

Outlook is the program found in Office. Outlook Express was an email program developed with earlier versions of Windows for users who did not have Office or did not need the full featured Outlook app.

Microsoft really works in strange ways.

There is no reason they couldn’t have left OE in Windows 7.

Another annoying thing they did is change the way the Solitaire game works.
It was fine the way it was…

I remember when I used DOS only and then Windows came out to make things easier for everyone because people had a hard time using DOS..
Well, it seems that Windows has evolved into something that is more difficult and harder to use then DOS ever was!

MS does utilize user input while developing new apps and OSes. Outlook Express had very few capabilities and users wanted an app that was able to check all email accounts at the same time, similarly to Thunderbird. There are times that majority still rules. Users wanted more features, and Outlook Express had gotten to a point where it just could not be improved upon, so instead of rewriting the entire program, they started a new mail service called Windows Live Mail. It does make perfect sense to me. I can check all my email accounts from one window at the same time. I did not like the interface that Thunderbird provided, hence I chose Windows Live Mail

I read where Microsoft was sued in England over monopolizing the OS and not allowing consumers to choose which programs they wanted installed. If I remember correctly WMP was the focus of this suit. When I installed 7 I had the same question about Outlook Express, and I read about this suit in England in an online forum. It stated the reason for excluding OE was to avoid a potential lawsuit. My next question was, Why they didn’t exclude WMP? Has anyone else heard of this lawsuit? It may or may not be true. Live Mail works great for me.

If you are a heavy email user and do a lot of sorting and archiving in a large number of folders, OE is the only thing that works properly. I may be going back to XP if I can’t find a mail substitute for Outlook Express that meets my needs.

Outlook Express was NEVER part of the Office suite. Outlook has always been the email client in Office. Despite the similar names they are two completely differenct products developed and maintained by two completely different groups within Microsoft.

I just downloaded the beta of Windows Live Essentials 2011 including Windows Live Mail. If you have tried and like the ribbon on Office 2007 or 2010, you will like Windows Live Mail. It does have a ribbon like interface. I have just begun exploring this beta version. Check it out!

I installed windows mail the other day and don’t like it.
