Have a client with a Compaq Deskpro EN running Win98SE and Office 2K SR-1. He likes to open a number of docs in Word at the same time.

Problem is, as he closes each document, the icon on the Windows taskbar leaves a blank button every time after the doc closes (sometimes he has 4 or 5 of these little ######s. They vanish if clicked on.

This is the second machine that has the same problem. Win98 has been upgraded to SE, Office has been reinstalled and later upgraded to SR-1. We’re using Windows peer-to-peer networking (only 3 users). Norton WinDoc, DiskDoctor, SpeedDisk, AntiVirus have all been run without errors or viruses reported. He has plenty of disk (30GB) and plenty of memory (128MB), and there are no tasks running in the background (per Task Manager and MSConfig). No goofy software installed on the machine (except, perhaps, Windows and Office, but that’s a whole ‘nuther subject).

    What’s causing this? help

There is a bug in one of the Hotfixes for Windows 98 that can cause that to happen. I found it in the Microsoft KnowledgeBase a few days ago. The KB article indicated that it happens with the screen saver, but my guess is that it can happen with any program. See Q280722.

thanks. I’ll give this a try, although I generally set screensaver to none when I set up a machine. I’ll take a look.

Someone once told me this was due to addressing space in the high graphics area. Do these Word files you refer to have graphics in them by any chance? In any case they are completely harmless, if irritating.
