One of our engineers has called and asked me how to format an “imaginary” number he created using the enginering function of IMDIV.

In Cell K36 the number is 0.68+263i
in cell K38 the number is 1.75+9i

    His formula is =IMID(K38,K36)

    The result is 2.26403588416245-8.00211402165516E-002i

He wants to have 2 decimals with the imaginary number showing

I can’t say I even really understand his question, so if I’m not making sense, please let me know and I’ll try to get more information.

    Thank you!!

IMID? I Assume you meant IMDIV.

The following monster formula should do what the engineer wants:

      =COMPLEX(TEXT(IMREAL(IMDIV(K38,K36)),"0.00"),TEXT(IMAGINARY(IMDIV(K38,K36)),"0.00"))

He should be able to adapt this if needed.

Yes, you’re right. I mistyped it. Sorry. I was looking at a screen print with about a 2 pt font. Thanks for the formula. I’ll pass it on to him tomorrow. Is there ANYTHING you can’t answer? Wow. Thank you!

I was hoping you hadn’t mistyped it.
I thought it might have been a custom function of his.
Because with the numbers given for K36 and K38 the answer should be
          3.42375076779547E-002-6.5654695618973E-003i
          and not
          2.26403588416245-8.00211402165516E-002i
          as stated.

I hope this engineer isn’t working on anything critical like Viking Voyager landings.

Hans – your solution was of course elegant
..I assume you meant “complex formula” rather than “monster formula”
