Hi My printer is not working(Epson XP-412) connected wirelessly but I am also getting a computer error as above and any attempts at googling it seem to just throw up many people try to sell me driver installing software without telling me what it is. It looks like a navidia driver, but I am not sure. Do you think both errors are connected or have I got separate issues Any ideas please

There may be something for both in Event Viewer which is where I would check.

Have you tried rebooting the computer to see if the error reappears ?

You could also go into Device Manager/View/Show hidden devices and check for any yellow alerts and have you run any anti malware scans ?

I have rebooted without any change. In device manager a yellow exclamation mark is beside USB device and is a USB controller which has a status of ‘this device cannot start’)code 10 it looks asif it has been on since aug 2010 which is about when I got the computer. cheers

Good question. Do you use a wifi USB connection? If yes, and you remove it and reboot does the yellow flag go away?

make and model of wifi connection in computer?

      • #1495710

I see which way you are going. as it happens the printer I was having a problem with is wireless, and I have cured that problem by reinstalling the printer from disc. I had a bit of a clearout of programs I hadnt used for a while, including some epson stuff I did not think I needed, but the usb error is still there, but may well be connected to the same thing. I checked the driver of the usb controller and it said it was up to date. thank you

When you get a Code 10 on an USB Controller you would normally right click on it and select Uninstall then either reboot or click on Action/Scan for hardware changes where it will reinstall – but I always create a restore point first in case it doesn’t.

I once uninstalled my Webcam when doing this which produced a section of Other Devices with a yellow alert next to the Webcam.

I could have used the restore point to reinstate it but went to the computer support site and downloaded a newer driver for it – it’s very rare that Windows will have a newer one and invariably you will get the message in Device Manager that the driver is up to date.

When you reinstalled the printer you would have gotten those Epson bits back.

Can you post the device ID of the problem USB device?
      Start > Run, msinfo32.
      Components > Problem Devices.

      cheers, Paul

Problem Devices USBdevice (VID-1f300-PID-efe8) ID ROOTUSB000 Does that help Paul As a Silver Surfer who came into computing late, you are taking me into parts of the computer which I am not familiar, but thank you very much for your interest, patience and diligence. cheers

That’s a strange device, I can’t find either the vendor or device.
You should see information in the form “VEN_xxxx” and “DEV_xxxx”. Can you see anything in that format relating to the problem device?

      cheers, Paul

Sorry Paul that is all I can see after doing run misinfo32 etc. below problem devices it says USB and going in there it is listed, but with the same id etc. is there anywhere else I can get the info. cheers

jwoods – Nice link, thank you.

    • #1495843

I read the link and decided to uninstall and reinstall the driver, but the whole thing has gone, so how can I install a new driver. Maybe I should have left it alone. I could do system restore I suppose, but the problem has never caused me any grief, and we dont know what it is anyway, so should i just leave it.

    • #1495853

Use your restore point to reinstate it then right click on it – select Properties and under the Details tab use the dropdown to select Hardware Ids.

Right click on the top highlighted one (you usually get additional compatible ones) then copy & paste it into a Google search and see what that comes up with.

It gets worse System restore says it failed and my files had not been changed (0xc0000022) yet the offending item has reappeared in System information under problem devices which is where it was before. Going into details ,bringing down Hardware Ids shows only the details I started with USB device(vid-1f3a-PID-efe8) Googling that is where I started when most items were driver programs trying to flog me there wares. Cheers BTW I have no problems with the printer since I reinstalled the system from disc

    • #1495984

Try doing the restore in Safe Mode.

Sometimes an AV program will interfere with a restore point.

I haven’t been able to find any info on it either.

Do you have an USB cable for your printer ?

If you have a cable, uninstall the USB device in Device Manager, shut down – switch the printer on and wire to the computer then switch on the computer.

Do you get any messages about an USB device installing or if the USB device has returned in Device Manager ?

    • #1496047

I dont understand how the restore is supposed to have failed but the offending device is back in device manager, and still fails to start. I dont have a cable for the printer as it is wireless only, and the printer works fine even with the device being not started

Windows must be trying to load something for that USB to have come back on its own.

When you uninstall it do you get any other entries in Device Manager – could be Other Devices or Unknown Devices.

What exactly is name of the USB in Device Manager ?

The name of the USB in device manager is as per the title thread. If I click on driver file details I get
C:windows32driversusbdrv-AMD64.sys I hope that means something

    • #1496241

I was hoping the USB device error was a left over from your printer problem as you normally have to wire it during its installation until it acquires the SSID for wireless connectivity and plugging the printer in may have forced Windows to kick start it with a driver update/installation.

As there are no Unknown or Other Devices showing in Device Manager, identifying what it’s for is the stumbling block.

You could try rolling back the driver to see if that does it.

What is the make & model of the computer ?

As that’s an AMD64.sys driver, I was wondering if the Southbridge of the AMD video drivers may sort it ?

The Southbridge looks after the USB Controllers.

While you can normally go to AMD and use its auto detect, in the first instance you should go to the computer support site for your model and check for the video driver download.

It is a Packard Bell desktop, and I have today sent a request to them about the problem, I await a reply. In reply to jwoods, yes I looked at that. they say to uninstall every driver in that section of device manager, and then reinstall. I can see how to uninstall but not sure how to get windows to reinstall them and should I do it one at a time or collectively, and you must remember that such actions make me nervous due to my limited knowledge. Such articles are aimed at the more experienced . the article is not very clear to me. Also whatever this item is it does not seem to be affecting the day to day running of the computer whether it is uninstalled or not, so in some respects I am reluctant to do anything at all. it is very interesting, but I hope you understand. I think I will wait for Packard Bell to reply before I go any further. Thank you

    • #1496399

I have had a reply from Packard Bell which is disappointing to say the least. They simply say I should Do system restore with no attempt to identify the problem device or driver. the problem with system restore is I have no idea when this problem occurred, it could have been there ages. I did not notice the exclamation mark in Computer until I went into Devices and printers when I had the problem with my printer(Which turned out to be my fault because I had uninstalled too much epson stuff.) However I decided to do a restore in safe mode as someone had suggested and lo and behold it failed again. This time it said it failed to replace the file CuserscolinappdatalocaldimruntimeskinE2FEE5~1apl.ico, which means nothing to me. I then decided to once and for all disassociate the problem from my printer failure and I completely uninstalled everything Epson from the comp and reinstalled it from my disc. The printer is fine and the exclamation mark against the device is still there. The only thing left for me to try is the suggestion in the link given earlier to cure a code10 was to uninstall each of the items in device manager USB. I have 6 items in there Logitech webcam…Standard Enhanced PCI to USB host controller….Standard Open HCD USB Host Controller…..The title USB device with the error…..USB Mass Storage Device…USB Root Hub and again USB Root Hub. Apart from the logitech nothing means anything to me. I can uninstall each of them in turn but can anyone show me how to get them back as that is what is suggested in the article, and also is it worth doing anything at all, in view of the fact the problem does not seem to be causing any bother apart from driving me round the bend and touching my curiosity. Cheers

    • #1496420

You may have to reinstall the Logitech Webcam as Windows may not reinstate that.

Create a restore point and just do one at a time, creating a restore point after each has reinstated – that way if one doesn’t come back, you are just restoring to the last reinstall.

Note: You will lose function of your USB devices (mouse, etc.) so you will likely need to do the CTRL-ALT-DELETE key sequence to reboot. You may also need to use the TAB key to get to the red button in the lower right hand side of the menu screen to actually shutdown or restart.

Wouldn’t he also lose his USB keyboard? And if so, how will he do the CTRL-ALT-DEL key sequence?

If he has an old Packard Bell, it may have PS/2 ports, which means that if he can scrounge up a PS/2 keyboard and mouse, he will at least have those two devices. PS/2 has saved me twice when USB got hosed on the computer.

I have printed off the instructions which seem straight forward, but the point about the keyboard seems valid. However before I do a full try I would like to run something by you. I have uninstalled the offending usb device, restarted my computer and it has gone, but there is no attempt to reinstate by windows. I also take note of you saying I would lose my mouse, and I now recall about 2 months ago my mouse stopped working, and not knowing about reinstalling drivers etc, I got my mouse from my old computer which I keep on standby running Vista. I simply unplugged my mouse and plugged in the old one. I think windows automatically set it up and away I went. I wonder if the offending item could be a throwback from the other mouse. In any case the offender has gone and everything seems to be fine. What are your thoughts please

        • #1496499

Just as a further to that I have just checked my mouse and keyboard and they have green and purple plugs going into other areas

    • #1496751

I thought that may be the case. I take it they are not part of the USB section in device Manager, so my theory is off piste

        Hi All,

For completeness, I thought I would mention that the VID=1f3a, PID=efe8 identity
is a Dragon Touch Y88X android tablet.
