F3 function key not working (XP)

We can’t access autotext using F3. The autotext is there and can be inserted by doing Insert/Autotext. Hitting F3 produces nothing. I thought the key was broken, but ALT F3 works to input autotext. Interestingly, in keyboard customization, hitting F3 in the “Press new shortcut key” box produces nothing. (F3 is listed as the current shortcut.) I thought this was a keyboard problem until I found that ALT F3 still works. What might be the cause of this?

Hi Erica:
Actually, the first thing I would try is to see what F3 is assigned to by using the technique in post 127986. Try it on a new document. If it’s not assigned to InsertAutoText, you can assign it to the template. It will assign it to normal.dot by default, but you can also assign it in any custom template that you may have, provided a document based on the template is open.

If this happens with only one document, you may have inadvertantly changed the key assignment for that document only. You can assign the key for that document only by using the technique in the post mentioned above.

Thank you for your response. As it turns out, the problem was caused by a conflict with another program (an Olympus transcription program) over the F3 key. Once F3 key was reassigned in the Olympus program, the autotext operated properly in Word.
