Files/folders not showing up in CD/DVD/BR reader/writer

I can insert a CD (such as a driver CD) or a movie DVD into my drive and nothing shows up. Click on the icon either the desktop or open My Computer and click that one. A blank window will open. If I go to disk management and click the drive there, then the files/folders will show up instead of a blank window.

This used to not be this way. Anyone have any ideas as to how to fix it?

crnv88, welcome as a new poster.

In Disk Management is there an assigned drive letter? If not go ahead and assign a drive letter. This may fix your problem.

You might also have to reinstall drivers. Go to Device Manager, choose your device and delete it, then reboot and let Windows rediscover the device and install drivers for it.

Yes there is a drive letter assigned in Disk Management (otherwise the shortcut on my desktop or in My Computer would not work). I thought about uninstalling in Device Manger but then did not do it. Guess I’ll try that next.

I already tried the Fixit though I don’t think that is the problem as it’s for if the CD/DVD drive is missing or is not recognized by Windows. It is recognized, just when I put a disc in, no files or folders will show up until I go to Disk Management and click on the drive there first. Weird!

I tried the Fixit again for grins but it encountered an error and wouldn’t run. I know there is a manual registry edit for the upper/lower filters. I have to do some research to find that and try it for grins again.

I’ll post back with (if any) progress.

Deleted the drive in Device Manager, rebooted. Then started getting the error: I: is not accessible. Incorrect funtion, when I tried inserting a disc. (“I” is the letter of my optical drive.) Rebooted several times, more or less the same thing until I went to Disk Management. Funny thing is I didn’t even have to click on the drive in Disk Management, just open up Disk Management….strange.

Manually deleted the lower filter in the registry (didn’t have a upper filter entry). Rebooted and tried several times. Now all seems to be working well. If something changes, I’ll be posting again.

Now I feel like a real dodo cause I knew the steps to take that y’all suggested but felt like they wouldn’t work. LOL
I stand Corrected!

Glad your problem is solved. Some of these problems are frustrating and even though you know what’s happening it takes someone else pointing it out to re-open your eyes.

Just an FYI for those who like me were trying to find a solution:

I read through and didn’t get right away what should be done. Turns out a program that was installed (in this case was Roxio Creator that came with a DVD unit) messed up the registry.
What fixed the issue in my case was following the steps to remove upper and lower limits keys in the registry as indicated here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060 in point#3 reading:

Resolution 3: Manually fix corrupted registry entries

Note To use this method, you must be logged on to Windows as an administrator. If you need help verifying that you are an administrator, go to http://support.microsoft.com/gp/admin
Important Follow the steps in this section carefully. Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Before you modify it, back up the registry for restoration in case problems occur.

This problem may be caused by two Windows registry entries that have become corrupted. To use Registry Editor to delete the corrupted Registry entries, follow these steps:

[*]Press the Windows logo key + R to open the Run dialog box.
[*]Type regedit in the Run dialog box, then press Enter. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow
[*]In the navigation pane, locate and then click the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlClass{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
[*]In the right pane, click UpperFilters. Note You may also see an UpperFilters.bak registry entry. You do not have to remove that entry. Click UpperFilters only. If you do not see the UpperFilters registry entry, you still might have to remove the LowerFilters registry entry. To do this, go to step 7.
[*]On the Edit menu, click Delete.
[*]When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
[*]In the right pane, click LowerFilters. Note If you do not see the LowerFilters registry entry, go to the next resolution.
[*]On the Edit menu, click Delete.
[*]When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
[*]Exit Registry Editor.
[*]Restart the computer.

Hope this will help those who like me didn’t get it right away.

Also I should mention that this issue was somehow impacting also the stability of the overall system making MS product behave erratically including the OS. MS Office 2013 (Word and Outlook) would hang or crash, the OS would randomly give blue screens upon shutdown… and this was in addition to being unable to read the content of any CD/DVD (audio, video or data).
