Many files only have generic icons. On the desk top, in folders, Start list and even in Windows Explorer file types. All Office programs and Acrobat. I thinks the last thing I did was uninstall MS Office PowerPoint Viewer 2007 (C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice12PPTVIEW.EXE) but I am not sure. Re-installing it does not help. Secunia said it needed updating but since I have PPoint installed in Office 2007 I decided to uninstall the viewer.

    HP dv5029us
    XP SP3
    MCE 2002

Am trying to avoid strip to bare metal and system reinstall.
