Find common strings in different files

Most file comparison applications seek to identify differences between two closely similar files. Can anyone recommend an application which will find passages in file 1 which are a direct quotation from a part of file 2, where files 1 and 2 are unrelated and, apart from the quotations, dissimilar.

I imagine that some of the services which conduct plagiarism searches probably have this technology. I haven’t tried any of them myself.

What if you save the Word documents as plain text. Can you use a program such as WinMerge to find the similarities? Of course, it will find mostly differences, but in between the differences…
