finding duration (Excel 2002)

Hello. I am trying to add a calculation to my spreadsheet to determine the duration of a class. I have a column that has a start date and another one that has an end date. Is there a certain way these need to be formatted in order to find the difference in the two columns? I am not having much luck with this one.

Your start time and end time columns do not contain time values, but text values (Excel does not handle times with time zone indications in the same cell). So you cannot perform calculations involving the start time and end time unless you either change those columns to valid time values, or devise formulas to handle the time zone part.

First select Cols E/F
Edit – replace
find what EST
replace with: [leave blank]

This will convert the times to excel times
The formula will calculate the time difference
=D2+F2-C2-E2
It will be in days. format cells – number – custom: [h]:mm to display as hours: minute. If you want decimal hours then format as general for fixed number of decimals, but multiply by 24 to convert the days to hours:
=(D2+F2-C2-E2)*24

Copy this cell down the rows.
