When I open Firefox these days, the Firefox window is not the “active window” – which I think is unlike any other program I run.  This is despite the ‘text marker’ (|) flashing in the address bar.  Accordingly I have to both open the program and click in the window to start using the program.  This is a learned function so I don’t do it: and I always spend annoying time typing an address then having to repeat that!

This is not the behaviour in Chrome or Edge.

Is this a setting I have made?  I am not aware of any change I have made for Firefox alone but of course I might have done something accidently.

    thanks

For starters, Richard, which version of Firefox are you using?

There have been some visual “hiccups” in Firefox that have recently been patched, that’s why I’m asking.

Also, when you say “these days”, about how long a period of time do you mean?

I’m using Firefox 64 v 134.0 (which is basically whatever Mozilla updates me to).

I guess it has been many months now thought I cannot say for sure how long.  But more than one might typically call ‘recently’ (few weeks).

The visual “hiccups” were fixed in version 133.0.3, so that’s not the reason why you have to make FF’s window the one in focus.

When I open FF via a desktop shortcut, it opens with the focus on its window, because I can immediately type something into the address bar without clicking anywhere in FF’s window right after it opens.

As a sort of side note, quite some time ago (maybe three years ago by now), I was wondering why when I opened FF it opened in a window that wasn’t full sized for the screen. Anyway, after doing a little digging and testing, I found that because I had set one of the preferences in about:config a certain way, FF would never open in a fully screen-sized window, it would only open in a smaller than screen sized window no matter HOW I set the preferences in the shortcut properties box for Windows. Because I want that setting the way it is, I’ve gotten used to the way Firefox opens.

So, the actual cause in your case could be that one of the settings in that same area within Firefox was changed in such a way as to force you to click on the FF window to be able to type anything into the address bar but, just as well, it could be a Windows setting somewhere.

Richard, how do you usually open Firefox, from a Start menu shortcut or through a shortcut on your desktop or by another method? This might have some bearing on your issue.

Suggestions or thoughts from anyone else??

I believe that I have figured this out.

I use Display Fusion – primarily to manage wallpaper on my desktop (OK, I know that’s rather frivilous) but also for taskbars and the like.  The behaviour I am talking about is when I open Firefox using the taskbar on the secondary display  (this is so I can have the browser on the secondary display and my working window on the primary).  Display Fusion allows me to have different taskbars on the primary and secondary displays.

It only applies to Firefox opened from that secondary taskbar.  It seems that if I open Firefox from the desktop it behaves normally….  However….  if I open, for example, Edge from that secondary taskbar it behaves “normally” and keeps the focus, insofar as I can tell……

So I think it may be a DisplayFusion issue.   I will ask their community about it.
