My family and I use the free version of Avast. I carried out a manual update today and noticed that the program update to v2015.10.2.2214 included the following two PUPs:

    Hope this helps…

Rick, could you confirm that those two boxes are pre-ticked?

        Yes, they are pre-ticked.

It had those in the last-but-one version and the two before that. And yes, they were pre-ticked. The screen comes up after the reboot – you just untick them, press Finish and it all goes away.

Unlike most PUPs, Google Toolbar is a useful and very customisable tool. Its purpose is to provide enhanced access to the Google search engine. I’ve used it for years and wouldn’t be without it. It doesn’t hijack your home page or make itself your default search engine and it can easily be turned off or uninstalled. Its odd that it should be offered now though as it hasn’t been supported since 2012 and the FF version was withdrawn at that time. Its still compatible with W8.1 though.

Personal AV is dying, and this is them flailing.

I have been using Avast for some time now. I like very much it’s handling of viri-threats, PUPs, Kittens, etc. What I do not like: pre-ticked, pre-checkmarked thingies that are not partNparcel with Avast’s job — fighting viri, PUPs, and even some spy/malware.
i can understand the freebie having such unwanted pre-selections, however, the pay-for version of Avast [AVG, & others] should be totally OPT-IN.
