Before my hard drive crashed (oy) I was using http://www.ipswitch.com/Products/WS_FTP/%5B/url%5D to upload from my computer to my Comcast webpage. I really like that it is very user friendly.
At the time I downloaded it, a couple of years ago, it was free . Now, they only offer the first 30 days free.

Is there a similar utility that is as easy to use and is free ??

    Thank you.

SmartFTP is free for personal use, although it does recommend registering every time you start it. It has the convenience (?) that if you leave a remote window (i.e., your web host) open in its interface, the program will automatically connect back to that server the next time you start it.

I’ve been using FireFTP, an addon (or is it an extension) to the FireFox web browser. I find it extremely easy to use, giving you a local and remote panel to display files and folders, and arrows between the panels to say “copy this direction”.

If you’re already using FireFox (I don’t know if you are or not), it might be worth looking into.

thankyou thankyou thankyou I have been tearing out what little hair I have left trying to get something that works seamlessly with FireFox and FireFTP is just the ticket.

I’ve tried quite a number of FTP clients and finally settled in with ACE FTP Pro. They used to have a 100% free version, but looking at their website, they have either pulled it or the link for it is well hidden. They do have a 30-day Trial version of the Pro which you might want to try. For me, the others where just too complex and 75% of the features would never be used. ACE is very simple to use right out of the box and it has some great features that most of the others don’t, e.g., a “Preview” window for viewing both local and remote files. Check it out. grin
